I am 36 yr old female.  I weigh 183 and am 5'9".  I hate the way I feel and look.  I had been doing tae bo for 6 weeks or so with no results.  Then I started walking with my husband after work for 45 minutes.  no results.  what am I doing wrong?  I have started to try to eat better, recently I started buying yogurt again and realized how much I love it.  So for breakfast I have a yogurt and a fiber bar.  Then lunch is either a lean cuisine, smart ones or if I have leftovers from the night before and then for supper it is whatever I make for the family.  I work fulltime and have 3 kids, so after work is really hectic between homework, cooking supper, showers  and whatever else comes our way, I just have no ambition to work out not to mention the fact that I HATE to exercise.  I need some real motivation.  I just feel blah and have to force myself to go for a walk at night.  My problem is sweets, my husband has such a sweet tooth and it has rubbed off on me so now every night I feel like I NEED something sweet.  I need some advice on what can get me motivated, or what worked for you, what I can do to curb my sweet addiction.  I love salad, I love fruits, I love most veggies, and I love chicken....any ideas for a menu?  Thanks for any advice you guys can give me.  I know once I start losing a few pounds my motivation will come back.

you kind of sound like me!  I just recently went from 190lbs to 160lbs.   I am still struggling to lose the last 15 lbs or so but have absolutely discovered that exercise is a must!  You have to get physical somehow in order to loose and keep the weight off.  This doesn't necessarily mean that you have to belong to a gym, but daily physical exercise must be incorporated into your lifestyle.  Initially during my weight lose I started working out at the gym and watching what I was eating.  I dropped about 20 lbs.  I got comfortable and started slacking from the gym and eating less healthy foods (especially during hte holidays).  And I gained about 15 lbs. back!  Now I'm down that plus 15.  I found out that this is a lifestyle change and is not something that we can turn on and off but has to be the way we live our lives.  I know it sounds cliche but it's so true.  As far as the exercise goes, right now I am circuit training.  I bought the book "Making the Cut"-it is so good-and I highly recommened it---it takes a lot of dedication and commitment but will get you on the right track to permanent weight loss.  You have to find the motivation within yourself to go to the gym and work out.  NO one else will do that for you.  You have to want it!  There are days when I dread going....i'm tired and just want to relax......but you cannot do that. You have to develop a routin and stick to it.  Otherwise you won't be successful.  Plus after you leave you feel so happy that you went and don't feel like that fat slob laying in the couch eating potato chips.

That is the biggest piece of advice I can give you...you have to be active and you have to vary the activity in order to "confuse" your muscles.  STick with something for a while don't give up!  Remember you have to want it...........you have to find the motivation within yourself.  PLus it's always nice to visualize yourself in that bikini at the beach after you have reached your goal!

Exercise is good advise, but it will only get you so far without the diet to go along with it. I would change all your white breads and grains to whole wheat. If you have to eat red meats, then make them a really good cut with less fat. I eat fish myself, but turkey and chicken that are lean cuts work as well. Fruits and veggies should be the staple in your diet. Get rid of sodas, and any drinks with sugars. Allot of people like to drink tea, instead.

Beans are also healthy. Anything high in fiber will help when dieting. Butters and oils I would limit your use of them and switch to a brand that has added omega 3 in them.

I guess the best thing I tell you is to educate yourself more about the foods you are eating. Do a search on super foods and see what you would like to eat out of those foods and find out what things those foods are doing for your health. I also stick to low fat or fat free on all dairy products. There are many ways to change your diet. Just got to start trying new things.

Also you said you are eating yogurt and fiber bars. Are they healthy ones? There are a ton on the market that claim to be healthy that are just loaded with unhealthy things. So, learning to read food labels in always a good idea also.

Well, good luck to you. I hope you see some pound vanish soon...

As a single male, I cannot relate to all aspects of your life.

But I can say that sometimes losing those first few pounds can be challenging.  I recently started up my weight loss routine again.  I lost about 10 pounds, but then seemed to regain 4 - for no apparent reason - and was stuck at this slightly increased number for a while.

I kept at it, though, and am down about 10 more pounds (for about 15-16 pounds total).  Of course, this is still early but already people are noticing.

What I found that worked well for me is to eat well, but ensure I get some form of exercise.  When I lost weight a few years back, I was very restrictive - low cal diet and a good exercise routine.  This worked very well, as you might imagine.  However, it was tough to maintain.  I burned myself out on my own program.  This time I decided that even if it takes longer, I will eat properly (even allowing myself treats), but get lots of fiber, drink lots of water, and most importantly, move.  I count every exercise I do, from house-cleaning to walking the dogs to bowling and volleyball to using my aerobic bike and my BowFlex.  I have a feeling you are moving quite a bit already - just need to maybe add a tad bit more.

Your walks are a wonderful start.  Don't dismiss them.  You may simply be stuck like I was - in another week or two, suddenly the weight may come off.  But you may want to add just a bit more to your walks.  Take some weights with you (little 2 to 5 pound weights) to carry in your hands.  As you walk, lift your arms with the weights.  This little extra weight combined with the little extra movement will burn more calories (and start toning).  It's a minor item to add to something you are already doing.

Then, if you are able to drop your calories a notch, do so.

As you see some pounds come off, you may find yourself motivated to do more.  For now, though, these minor things (a few less calories - meaning maybe one snack less a day - combined with a bit more rigorous walk) should help.

Overall, it sounds like you are on the right track, just getting off to a slow start.  Stay with it.  Remember, the scale is only part of your answer.  If your clothes are fitting better, if people are noticing you looking a bit thinner, even if the scale says not much has changed, clearly you are doing the right things.

Good luck!  :apple:

Walking is good exercise for people who don't like to walk: you get to see things around the neighborhood at a more leisurely pace. But... you should be working up a sweat while walking. Talking should be a bit difficult because you should be breathing harder than normal. Walking to lose weight and a stroll around the neighborhood after dinner are two different animals. What you should aim for is a brisk walk.

As you walk, lift your arms with the weights. This little extra weight combined with the little extra movement will burn more calories (and start toning).
A trainer told me this might be counterproductive as your swing backwards might upset your walking stride forward - if you swing your arms back and forth. If you lift your arms up over your head, it might be okay. And, as doctoru2 said, start small with the weights, because you don't want to burn out.

You really need to get those sweets out of the house. Feed them all to your children or something. Get your husband to hide them where you won't find them. Like his place at work. You might use them as a reward for walking a certain distance per week.

You don't need to spend hours a day exercising, by the way. Two 20-minute walks a day is better than a forty-minute walk every other day.

As for motivation - the more healthy your lifestyle and the less overweight you are, the longer you'll be around to watch your children as they grow up.

Hey there ....
how are you ?
well i dont know if i can help , i really hope i would though ...well .. i have felt the way you do for a long long time ,  i needed a motevation too , and i needed great plans ..
well , to weight that much is not fun at all , and the start might seem too hard and the road might seem endless .
i would like you to think of your diet journey as something you do for yourself .. something that your body really needs, if you listen to it , for once and not to your kids and husband . we do tend to forget ourselves being mothers and wives , i know how my day begins and how it ends , but you owe yourself little attention .
set a small goal each time, don't demand much of yourself .. go easy and safe , dont expect to be a model in few days , when you know that its a life style rather than a period of time set to lose weight, it will be easier and you know that this is how you are going to be for a long long time ..
i usually gain a lot in pregnancies .. i had a trouble loosing after my first , it was like imposssible metion , but i started dieting and walking ... walking is amazing ... and if your husband support you by walking with you its great !!!!!! Use that . coz just for example even if i want to walk as exersice i cant because i cant leave the kids, i live far from the parents, and the kids are really just kids, cant be left alone ...
so ...... what i am trying to say is that i feel that you are looking at the whole thing with a negative attitude when you should actually be feeling great for having the chance to live healthy , and to get to your optimal weight where you enjoy a nice dress or a walk with pride , or just be proud of yourself for once .. ... and let your family be proud of you too ....
the kids need a healthy mom!!!! so isnt that motevation enough ??
well there are 6000 women that are dieting with these plans ...

ladyrima.com/article/details-26.html

and workouts .... posted weekly ,,
it has helped me to lose around 30 pounds ... after my first pregnancy in 2 months almost .. and i had a baby just 7 months ago .. so i am dieting again , till now i lost around 14 pounds .. still have to lose, but i am happy with the progress .... and i am doing this because i know how happier i am when i am in the right weight , rather than a momental happiness after a chocolate bar !!!

so i just hope i helped ...... :) and stay in touch for support ....

hope for the best ,
Mandy ,
