Hi

I'd like to get some advice from someone about an idea I have to lose an extra 7-10 pounds.  Say if my BMR calculations are around 1200 calories and BMR x sedentary is around 1500 calories a day.  Does that mean that I need to eat only around 1200 calories to lose weight?  And if I eat around 1500 and don't exercise I maintain the weight?  If so, which level of activity should I calculate my daily calories requirement on if I do 8,000 steps 5-7 days a week?  Should it still be classified as 1.2 or should it be lightly active or even higher of 1.55?

Yes if you eat around 1200 you will lose weight, and if you eat 1500 without exercise you will maintain your weight.  Instead of trying to decide what activity level climbing stairs makes you, I suggest you just take your sedentary number and add the amount burned from climbing the stairs.  You can use the calculators on here to find out how many calories its burning.  Its listed under "Walking - Up and Down stairs".

Thanks, I appreciate you replying.  I'm not doing any stair climbing, its 8000 steps that I do around the house.  When you sedentary number do you mean 1200 or 1500?

If I were you I would aim to try to stick at 1200 calories (for accelerated fat loss), but in special situations where you need extra calories, say a party or a meal out, and you go up to 1500 calories, I wouldn't beat myself up about it - just accept a much reduced deficit.

I agree that walking 8000 steps is probably a bit more than sedentary but I agree with the conservative approach suggested above.

Some maths: without the extra activity, eating 1200 when your maintenance calories are 1500 gives a lost pound every 12 days - you need to burn an extra 200 calories with exercise every day to bring it down to a lost pound every 7 days.
