Okay, here is my problem. Everyone says don't eat past 7:30 - 8:00pm and that is great advise, for people that go to bed at 9:00. When should I stop eating? I go to bed between 12:00am & 1:00am. If I stop eating, which I have tried, really tried hard, at 8:00, there is still a 4-5 hour gap between me and bed. My stomach gets empty around 10:00, I'm starving. I try and drink water for the feeling of fullness, but it doesn't work, 20 min. later, I've got the hungry feeling again.
So what is the ratio between last snack and bedtime? How many hours in between?

Why do they say not to eat past 8 pm?
Some say that because when people do it's just junk food snacks. Other say because your aren't exercising and it just turns to fat.
I say nonsense to both!
(Perhaps when you eat makes some TINY difference in calories burned, but eat one extra dessert at grandma's and you'll likely negate 3 months of fussing over it!)
Here are some newsletters to read. The first suggests that you should NOT have that big, hungry gap:

Well, I don't have time to find the second... but it makes the point that how many calories you eat and burn in a day is what matters... not when you eat or burn them.

Ideally, you should eat 5 or 6 times a day.
The advice for women is to eat 5 times a day, but that seems to be based on an assumption that women need less calories - and that 6 meals would result in portions too small to be satisfying.
That's sometimes not good advice, because if you're fairly heavy (say over 200 pounds) then you should be eating a reasonable amount daily to ensure that what you lose is fat, not muscle. So if your intake should be 2400 calories (for instance) that's an average of 400 calories for 6 meals, which isn't too small.
I eat 6 times a day and have kept this up since it was part of a successful fat-loss regime that I started ages ago. I find it easy, because when I eat every 3 hours or so, I rarely get hungry.
I try to keep my meals in this ratio: 20/15/20/15/20/10%.
I also try to stay away from complex carbs for my last 2 meals, and go for leafy vegetables and lean protein. My last meal would usually be something like rice cakes and yeast pat?â?® with a protein drink. That's light enough to take even very late at night.
Like you, I tend to go to bed pretty late (12.30 to 01.00) and find that the small meal at about 1030 fits the bill nicely.
It pays to drink plenty of water, too.
Good luck with your efforts,

| Thank you very much, I'll look at that link right now. I didn't think it was doing me any good to try and not eat late at night, though I was still awake.

| Thanks, that is exactly what time I can't stand the hunger any more. Between 10:00 & 10:30 I usually need food. Now I can plan on eating, some sort of snack, I'll have fun figuring it out now that I know its legal. This will be great, dieting and all that goes with it has never been that much of a problem, but the eating at night was and I never put my all into a regular eating routine/diet because I figured it wouldn't do any good if I knew I was going to mess up and eat at night. Thanks.

My favorite late night snack has always been popcorn (made in a very healthy way). It certainly fills you up!
Then I get tired of that after awhile, and switch to a cold apple on a cutting board... making and eating slices while watching TV or whatever.
Then it's back to the popcorn!
