I'm wondering if there is a minimum amount of calories to ingest per day. i know that for my weight i shouldn't have more than 1200 calories if i want to lose weight. i'm not intending on starving myself, but if i eat mostly veggies that have very little calories, is it possible to not eat enough calories and end up storing calories in defense or soemthing?

You seem to have a few misconceptions here, which is understandable given the level of BS marketers and trainers spew.

1. There is no lower limit that can be "blanketly" applied to everyone. Caloric requirements are entirely dependent on goals, weight, composition, activity, metabolism, etc.

2. I highly doubt 1200 calories is what you can't go over to lose weight. If you don't mind, I'd be interested i hearing your stats (age, sex, height, weight). In general, the best idea is to eat as much food possible while still triggering appreciable fat loss. In most all cases, this is not going to equate to something as low as 1200 calories unless you're very tiny and inactive.

3. Your body can't store calories b/c you're not eating enough. That's what is commonly tossed around, usually in the package of the "starvation mode." The starvation mode, if that's what you'd like to call it, isn't an event that's triggered at a certain low caloric intake. Rather, it's a gradual adjustment made by your body anytime it's underfed. That in mind, any person who is dieting (calorie deficit) can be thought to be in starvation mode. Diet harder more strictly/intensely and your body will adapt faster.

With all that said though, if you're starving yourself, you're going to lose weight. Your body doesn't turn what should be a massive calorie deficit into a surplus, which would be needed if your body was going to store stuff (ie, fat).

Any specific questions or comments in response to these points?

I'm also, as a reminder, still interested in hearing your stats.

These are my stats, Female/25/h:5"4/w:155lb. I'm looking to lose about 35 to 40 pounds.

Thank you for the info, it all mad perfect sense! I just want to assure you that i'm not starving myself, although i have just recently decided to fix my eating habits, as in 3 meals and a snack a day, plus water, lots of water. I'm not especially active though, its kinda complicated, i live in the woods, scenic, beach front, great. But there are cougars and i'm too afriad to walk far by myself, other than that, my house is really small and whenever i try to excerise my kids jump all over me and think its a great game and by the time their asleep i'm too tired to excersize. Anyways, there's my life story lol

Using the calculators on this website and the stats provided, your BMI is 26.6, your unadjusted RMR is 1433, if you are sedentary you burn approximately 1720 calories (so if you eat this many calories you shouldn't lose or gain).

Sounds like you have it the other way around. I certainly can't see why you should need to eat LESS than 1200. 1200 already represents quite a deficit (30%). You might find 1400 to be more tolerable (if a bit slower) for fat loss. Either way, with relatively fewer calories you should pick foods higher in micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, fibre, pytochemicalS).

Do your kids take naps? If they do that is a good time to get in some exercise. Also, I would maybe try to pick up a used exercise bike. They are fairy small anymore or at least there are smaller ones out there and you could do that while watching your kids.

It's certainly possible to lose weight without exercise I did. But, now I have allot of flab and stuff. So, I am trying to get rid of that now, and am wishing I would of been exercising the whole time I was loosing weight.

Plus, the more you exercise the more you can eat and still lose weight. Also, exercise is one the biggest way to reduce your chances of getting a disease of some sort. Exercise builds muscles and the more muscles you have the more calories you burn.

I really recommend trying to get something in. Even if it's just lifting a few hand weights. You can even make your own or just lift heavy stuff around the house, like your kids, lol.

Something I do with the kids, is dancing. We put in a cd and jump, run, dance all over the place.

Anyway, I will quit preaching about exercise, now. Good Luck to you!
