I think I have tried just about everything to lose weight in my life. Some have worked, some have not. But the one thing I discovered for myself is that to KEEP the weight off requires a change in LIFESTLYE. Without it becoming a natural part of your life you will never stick with it. That means taking SMALL steps. A dramatic change doesn't last because it's just too much, too soon. For myself, whenever I start getting those thoughts in my mind that say, "Oh no, not THIS again. This stinks. This tastes terrible. Who needs this?" And on and on... When I start getting those thoughts, I know the fad I'm currently on is not going to last much longer. What has worked for me over the years and continues to work are the small tips that I have discovered that are not hard, boring, or tasteless. Only the things that don't cause my mind to revolt are the ones that seem to last.

The biggest challenge for me in my weight loss journey has been KEEPING the weight off. I have made some fantastic reductions in my waistline only to slack off and little by little gain it all back AND THEN SOME. How many times have I thrown my hands up in the air and say to myself that's it, I give up. What's the use? Finally, I realized that the only way to really keep the weight off is to forget about the fad diets and gimmicks. The only real way was to change my LIFESTYLE. And that, my friends, doesn't happen overnight. It's a step by step process that requires a lot of trial and error to find which weight loss tips and techniques you will STICK WITH. And that's different for everyone. Some people don't mind drinking a gallon of water a day. Others can't stand it. Some find that eating a ton of raw carrots really isn't too bad and cuts down the appetite. Others will kill if they look at another carrot. So, you really have to find what works for you IN THE LONG RUN. Because keeping the weight off means a way of life, not a fad.

That is why the fad diets don't work - it's a crash, not a diet change. People think too often that a "diet" is a temporary change in eating. To keep weight off, you must change your diet permanently, not just go on and off the latest fad.

The first tip I recommend is to purchase a blood glucose meter and be sure not to eat until your blood sugar is at a normal fasting level. If you eat while your blood sugar is still high, it means you did not fully digest your last meal. This will cause your insulin to spike, resulting in more fat storage.

Keeping the weight off is so hard for me too. I feel like I can be on the right track for so long and then so easily get distracted! But I am going to keep trying :-)

tryn2bfit48 wrote: The little things add up. Rome was not built in a day and neither was your waistline. Undoing years of a weight gaining lifestyle isn?óÔé¼Ôäót going to happen overnight. But it WILL happen if you stick to little changes that add up over time. Like, parking your car a little further away in the parking lot of malls and supermarkets can add up to thousands of extra calories burned. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator when available can also add up. Straightening out your garage or cleaning out the attic or back yard also adds up. In other words, get moving. But don?óÔé¼Ôäót kill yourself. Just make small adjustments that force you to move a little more. You?óÔé¼Ôäóll be surprised how it all adds up over time. It really comes down to one basic formula: Calories in, calories out. The calories out have to exceed the calories in if you want to lose weight. And the calories in have to just about equal the calories out if you want to maintain your weight. If you go hog wild with a new diet or exercise fad it won?óÔé¼Ôäót last because it will be too uncomfortable in the long run and you will quit. If you don?óÔé¼Ôäót torture your body, your brain won?óÔé¼Ôäót tell you to quit. So, don?óÔé¼Ôäót get discouraged. Get patient. That may not sound sexy, but it works.

Thanks for your sound advice, I too have struggled for years and agree with what you say about small steps. I think one of the things that gets in the way sometimes with taking small steps is when we want to loose weight quickly...I know it should be done slowly and steadily but I'm on a rush at the moment I've got around 34lb to loose before June 09. In a moment of panic I bought Proactol. It's been an interesting journey. I'm not sure if it's the fact I've paid a lot of money for the Proactol or that they work and my appetite is suppressed. Because I've paid for them I'm obviously going to keep using them as I have nothing to loose but weight. (I hope) My motivation is quite high at the moment apart from finding it difficult to get into an exercise routine. I once read a good book called 'think yourself thin' by Debbie Johnson its free online I liked her reasoning and suggestions. I lost lots of weight thinking like I did when I was thin. Only problem was I didn't eat healthily and looked ill. When all the negative comments came I started to eat again to deliberately gain weight. Then didn't stop!!!!! Now I'm around 34lb overweight!!!!!
