| Hi, Im 20 years old, 5ft 3in and weigh 230 lbs. Just a year and a half ago i weighed 160 lbs. I have been over eating this whole time and didnt even realize that i had a problem. I was shopping for clothes the other day and I couldnt find one pair of jeans that fit. I didnt even know what had happened, I went home and looked at the jeans I owned and I saw that every single on of them was stretch and I felt so horrible that I had changed that much without realizing it.

Sometimes it happens that way--sneaks up on you. I mean, we see ourselves every day, so changes over time are sometimes hard to spot. ESPECIALLY when the change is negative or something we don't want, we tend to ignore the little signs along the way, rationalizing them away or just plain turning a blind eye. Trust me, plenty of times I have noticed my clothes getting tight and I have thought
oh they must have shrunk in the wash
or I will notice that my body is thickening and I will blame it on water retention or my period coming, when I really know #%@&! well that I am just plumping up because I eat poorly and don't move my body enough.
But look, I am sure you have heard the old proverb
"A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step" and that's true! It's just one step after the other, again and again and again. But it's always just steps! You will be able to get the body back that you want, you just have to start taking some action. It won't change overnight, but it WILL change.
You might want to read the tutorial on this site for some helpful tips and an explanation of how the body works when it comes to weight loss.
I have found this site to be extremely helpful and motivating, and I know a lot of other people have too. So, welcome! Enjoy and good luck!

Hi there, I get the whole eating too much thing, I think most of us can relate. The reason I gained so much was from quiting smoking, I added 60lbs within a 6month period. I knew it was happening, yet I couldn't stop it ....I traded my cigs for food. That was almost five years ago, and I am now losing it. Takes much more effort to lose then it did to gain . When I look at it though it took 6 months to gain it, and carry it for those years, and it has taken me 6 months to lose it. I am almost there, then I can start losing that excess baby weight I gained, ugh. ...It gets easier though so don't give up!! This forum has helped me so much, so stick around.Last edited on 8 Oct 2008 09:59 pm by Lucy

Eat more protein... it helps to shut off your appestat.
Avoid artificial sweeteners... they cause cravings
Avoid MSG... it is an appetite enhancer (get "natural" meats as well, as most meats are injected)
Eat organic... pesticides are appetite enhancers.
Eat low glycemic foods... level blood sugar controls cravings
Try it for a week. I think you will be amazed.

It happens to many of us: this sneaking weight gain. However, you need to take a positive spin on things. You're very young so it will be easier for you to lose the weight back to where you started, you're aware now and that's important, and you know what to do: cut back on the bad food, start exercising, and realize that food is a friend, but shouldn't be a comfort source.

The biggest 2 biggest things I can recommend to prevent overeating are
1) Water. It fills up your stomach (which translates to less eating) and keeps you hydrated (which translates to more energy and prettier hair, skin, and nails). Also, often when we think we are hungry, it is actually our bodies telling us we are thirsty, so always be sure to drink a glass before you eat something just to be sure. If you have trouble getting enough water, I leave water bottles full of it just lying around at strategic points in the house and find myself drinking it just because its there (kind of like when you much on a bag of chips lying around just because its there--except water's actually healthy )
2) Vegetables. I know that protein is supposed to be the king of satiety, but I find vegetables to be just as if not more filling than protein. Fresh ones are the best, but frozen is also pretty good. Canned ones tend to have added sodium and other ingredients so I don't really recommend them.
Oh, another thing: fruit gets a bad rap because of all the sugars, but they're natural sugars, which means they're not that bad for you. Plus fruit have so much fiber and nutrients, you'd be a fool not to eat them. Besides, they're delicious!
