I just watched this seasons premier of The Biggest Looser on TV and the biggest looser for the week was a 400 + pound guy that lost 39 pounds. He had a lot of tummy fat, but I just don't see how in the world it would be possible to loose that much safely. That's about 117,000 calories worth of fat. (I know you don't measure fat in calories, but it does take a deficit of about 3000 calories to loose 1 pound of fat).
Anyway, I don't see how it's possible. And if this guy really DID do it, then it seems to me that the show could do damage by showing results that are SO unreasonable, that others who are working hard to loose weight could become discouraged.

Yes, it is possible, but most of it was probably water.
I've lost 16 pounds in one week before, largely due to water weight. My biggest daily fluctuation actually occured this week - on October 1st, I went up to 231 from a huge restaurant meal that I had eaten that day. Later that night, I went for a 33-mile bike ride, lost a load of water, and was down to 221 by the next morning.
The body is capable of holding an inordinate amount of water, especially for those who are significantly overweight.

Crimson that is crazy !! Were you shocked when you saw the number change? I would have thought my scale was broke.
And how long did it take you to bike 33 miles??

I wasn't really that shocked - I've gotten used to huge number fluctuations by now. I think it has something to do with how much I sweat. On my days off of exercise, I practically always weigh several pounds more by the next morning.
Today was an exception, though. I weighed 220 today, despite no exercise yesterday but my usual 1-mile walk. My old diet still put me under the RDA for sodium on most days, but my new diet has a greatly decreased sodium intake, along with a heck of a lot more fiber and water. Maybe this will help to balance the fluctuations a little.
It took me 90 minutes to cycle the 33 miles. I've never done an activity so demanding. I had to wait a few minutes before I could even do my cool down stretches.

/\ /\ You must be on a road bike correct??? I am thinking of getting one since most of my riding is on the street. My MTB is real heavy (33lbs) so doing 30 miles on it is like 50 on a road bike. Takes way longer to 30 mile on it cause my avg speed is about 18 mph . Where the gears on a road bike make it easier to go fast

Actually, no, it was just a stationary bike. I don't own a real bike - I never even learned how to ride. 
I'm considering buying one now, though - my weight deterred me from getting one in the past.
By the way, 33 miles is not the actual distance - it is a distance equivalent based on RPM and resistance. Lately, my RPM has averaged between 115-120 overall.
Hellrazor, you are the king of the bike, bud. I'd love to be able to do what you do someday. 
Speaking of which, how do you prevent your butt from getting sore? Is that why bikers often stand up for a little bit while they're cycling? My butt used to hurt when I first started, but I got over that - now I believe it's due to decreased circulation to the legs.

Yeah, thats pretty much why bikers do that. At least thats why I do. I don't know if it has anything to do whith circulation tho. I've just always figured it was because my seat's kinda hard.

Proper fitting of your bike , good seat, gel seat cover and padded shorts. If your bike isnt set up right you can have all kinds of things hurt. All bike shops will do this when you buy it from them and if they don't go some where else. Seeing what you can do now you could do it. I mean if you can do that much on a stationary bike you are ready. Do research on bikes there are all kinds of different bikes to suit your needs. Off road is the best to me but I also love riding on the road. They more time in the saddle also helps with things. Just make sure if you do ride and your goo goo goes numb something is wrong with your set up

I almost choked on my beans and rice when I read that. Haven't heard that one yet! 
My...*AHEM* goo goo did used to go numb, but that hasn't happened in a long time. I actually just learned that my seat has been one notch too low all this time. I read that when you raise your knee at a right angle, it should be level with your seat, and it wasn't before.

If it was the first week than maybe, though it had to be a pretty strict week to do that in. Wow. I doubt if this kind of pace can continue. I'm sure it did good for the ratings, though

I was told when your pedal is in the 3 o clock position your knee should be over your pedal for best power. Also I don't know if the bike you use is a real bike seat or one of those huge uncomfortable ones. If it is like a real bike seat and you can adjust your seat frontwards and backwards. It is best to move as far as possible this eliminate pressure to your hand . If it is to close you will apply to much pressure and your hands will go numb. I hate that feeling but I get mostly in my left pink toe. That is mostly cause by to tight of a shoe which I'm trying to stretch out

I do measure fat by calories...Works for me....
Lesee, 117000 dived by 7 days= 16700 calories per DAY!....
Vigorous biking burns 14 cal per minute
16700 divide by 14=1193 minutes divided by 60= 19.8 hours
So if you:
- Ate NOTHING
Biked at race pace for 19 hours a day
Slept for the last 5
then did that all over again for 7 days....
You could lose 39 lbs in one week,
But I don't think you would feel too good after that week.

| did he have anything extra in that week, like colonic irrigagtion? that can #%@&! a fair few pounds. I've heard that the body can hold onto upwards of a stone of waste (i was going to say something a lot worse then, but my fingers ground to a halt just in time).
