Basically, i'm 15, about 5'7, and weighing between 140 and 150 lbs and i want to lose about 20, i'd like to be around 120 lbs.

I know some of you may say im being unhealthy but i'm a horse rider, there fore need to weigh less to be able to pick up my speed. :horse:

Also i had braces fitted last week - so im not looking for quick weight loss, basically id like to have lost this weight by around 18 months (how long i'll have my braces). My problem is that i am a 100% complete comfort eater :pizza:, and i hate it

I also can't seem to help eating before i go to bed  Which i hear is quite unhealthy.

I live in a mountainous area, so any suggestions at all would be appreciated!

Usually once you start eating healthy, you stop craving "comfort" foods or at least your comfort foods become something that won't bite you in the butt later.  I have cut white carbs (any bread, refined sugar, or starch-based carbs) out of my diet for about three days now because of this new information that I got, and I am used to eating fast food and candy every day, and I mean EVERY DAY, like my day wouldn't feel complete without it, and I thought it was going to suck and be really hard to cut out the white carbs, but I have really been very happily surprised with the fact that I do not crave "comfort" type foods at all.

Also, with comfort foods, it is a good idea to get into some mental training to be able to stop yourself from turning to food for solace.  I would recommend starting with just taking five minutes twice a day, like in the morning and at night, and just breathe deeply and relax and think about the things in your life you are thankful for and happy about.  It can even be something as simple as the fact that you can see or can walk around or the fact that you have a place to live or even that you have a favorite shirt or a book that you are enjoying reading.  This really helps to program your mind into thinking about happy thinkings and refocusing your thoughts on gratitude and happiness.  Then also, throughout the day, whenever anything good happens, even something simple like you find a parking space or something is funny on TV, you take the time to consciously appreciate it and say to yourself, "that was great, thanks!" or "that was so funny, what a good laugh that was" or "It is so nice to have such a good friend/good mom/etc." as the thoughts come to you.    I find myself being grateful for this board especially because when you do get a craving, or want some comfort foods or whatever, you can sign on here and distract your fiending little mind.

And then before you go to bed at night, as you are falling asleep, just go over the things, little things or big that happened in your day that made you happy and try to drift off to sleep with a little smile on your face... this can also help bring about good dreams!

Oh also, I have recently received some information that eating before bed can actually be GOOD for you, it will actually help you  burn more calories as you sleep and keep your metabolism up for longer than if you go to bed on a empty stomach.  However, you must be smart about what you eat because if you eat the wrong thing (carby stuff, basically), you will become a sleeping fat-storing machine instead of a sleeping fat-burning machine.  The best choice to eat before bed is something that is heavier protein  or a vegetable.  This is the only time of day it is NOT good to eat fruit because they are too carby and have too many natural sugars.  But go ahead!  I ate a handful of macadamia nuts before bed last night and I ate a piece of cheddar cheese tonight and it's pretty late, but I am feeling good about it beause I know I am doing myself a favor.  Plus, if you eat this particular type of food before bed, I have noticed that I DON'T wake up craving anything carby, which is great.  If I eat carby stuff before bed, I wake up hungry and wanting a big bowl of cereal or a bagel or something.

Problems with eating before you go to bed... you are NOT alone!!

I usually crave toast before I go to bed, and I always give in. (AHH!)

I suggest, that to help with the eating before bed, brush your teeth right after you finish supper. It sounds pretty basic, but you are less likely to eat a snack, when you already have your teeth brushed and clean! I do this, and it has worked for me.

Also, when you are craving snacks throughout the day, you are probably just thirsty! Your body is sending messages to you, saying, I need hydration! - but we usually mistake that for hunger.

Another easy way to get out of snacking is chewing gum. And did you know, that when you chew peppermint gum, it keeps you more alert and keeps you focused? If I am craving something sweet, I chew some flavored gum.

Another tip is drinking tea. I am obsessed with green tea, and it is good for you with all the anti-oxidants in it. If you are not a tea drinker, then water with lemon.

I hope this has helped you! Let me know how it goes.

Another thing that you should think about is, make sure you are'nt getting weak in your weight loss quest. At 5'7" and 150,you are not overweight at all.Riding is very demanding on the body. With riding you'll be burning lots of calories, never mind the upkeep of the horse burns lots as well. What event are you competing in that you need the extra speed for ?:)
