I usually hate hot dogs because they are made of disgusting things.  But for some reason I have really been craving a grilled hot dog, burnt beyond recognition.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a healthier hot dog or bun?

Yes, Hebrew National. They are kosher, and do not have a lot of the garbage that other hot dogs do. You can also buy them in 97% fat free.

They don't plump on the grill, though, like Ball Parks and others do, but I like the taste. I don't have a delicate palate, though, either.

As far as buns go, good luck with that. The buns we bought for 4th of July dinner had 200 calories apiece! The lean hamburger meat was only about 160 for a 4 oz. burger! I usually just eat mine on bread. I get Arnold's flax and fiber. It's great.

If you're going to eat on a bun, watch out for corn syrup and/or high fructrose corn syrup. The vast majority of breads contain this, and it is not good for you at all.

Happy eating!

EDITED because the word censor is more picky than I thought. LOL

I totally second Hewbrew Nationals!  I buy the 97% fat free (45 calories each, opposed to the at least 150 in other hot dogs, including regular HNs), and I can't taste any difference between them and the full-fat variety.

Thanks for the great recommendations!  I picked up some Hebrew National hot dogs and some regular buns.  I figured it was worth the splurge to get the craving out of my system.  I threw them on the grill and they turned out great (nice and burnt, just how I like them!)

Thanks!

I am really going to have to try these. I usually get the jennio turkey dogs and then put a ton of chili beans with low fat cheese to disguise the taste of them. lol

I think it's worth posting the nutrition info for them here. It definitely defies the nutritional value of the conventional hot dog!

Hebrew National 97% Fat Free

Serving Size: 1 frank (49g)

Calories: 45
Total Fat: 1.5g
Saturated Fat: 0.5g
Trans Fat: 0g
Cholesterol: 15mg
Sodium: 370mg
Potassium: 0mg
Total Carbohydrate: 2g

When compared to a beef Ball Park frank, the difference is obvious!

Ball Park Beef

Serving Size: 1 frank (56g)

Total Fat: 16g
Saturated Fat: 6g
Cholesterol: 40mg
Sodium: 560mg
Total Carbohydrates: 3g

Ball Park franks taste good, but the difference is pretty obvious here, eh?

Wow - I never heard of those hot dogs before but I will look for 'em on the next grocery trip.  I'm not a big fan of hot dogs; I buy the guys the Ball Park ones...and me the rubberized turkey dogs.     Probably why I'm not such a big fan.  Thanks to you guys, I will give these Hebrew National ones a try!

I think I'll give the hebrew national a shot too.  But have you tried chicken sausage, it's pretty good, not quite like a hot dog, but much healthier and if you like sausage it's got that sausagy flavor without the fat.

I tried the Hebrew National (97% FF) ones last night - Not bad!  Way better than my rubberized turkey dogs I sometimes get.  Didn't realize they were sort of pricey; only 7 dogs in a pack for $4.59 at my store.  Still get a  though.

Hey, I finally remember to get some of these hebrew nationals at the store. I had some today with chili and they were great.

They almost remind me more of a polish sausage than a hotdog. But, either way, much better than the turkey dogs. :yum:
