Hello Everyone,
I'm new to this forum and am not sure where or how to begin.
My problem is that I only have been eating 600-800 calories for over two months and am feeling better and worse, at the same time.
So, let me began from the very start.
A little over two months ago I had a strange problem with a bloody nose. I became worried that it might be medically related to me being overweight. To make a very long story short I decided that I need to lose weight because my blood pressure was through the roof. My doc actually said I was having bloody noses from dry weather and not my high blood pressure. I didn?óÔé¼Ôäót believe him. That might be my first problem.
Okay. So after I visited the doctor I decided to start eating healthy, so I put myself on a diet. At first the diet was to eat healthy. I was not eliminating much, just not eating fast food and eating "healthier" I did not feel as though that was helping, so I made a drastic change. I decided I would only lose weight if I went to a little under 600 calories a day.
I found these micro meals, some sort of Healthy Choice ones. They are 290 calories each. I started eating two of those a day. One around noon and the other around six. Between each of those I did not have any other food or anything, just water. I did that for about 6 weeks and my friends and family started to notice I was loosing weight "too fast" so; I changed my diet about two weeks ago to eating five times a day. It might seem like a lot but everyone I know disagrees. I wake up and have a cup of cereal and soy milk. Then throughout the day I have carrots (at least a cup or so), an apple, and a banana. Towards the end of the night, for dinner, I have a pretty large chicken breast sliced over a half head of lettuce.
I?óÔé¼Ôäóm not really sure what point I?óÔé¼Ôäóm trying to make right now. Basically my family is saying I need to eat more. I have lost nearly 36 lbs in two months, less then two months. I?óÔé¼Ôäóm afraid to eat now and have a hard time eating what I mentioned above. I?óÔé¼Ôäóm still really overweight. I weight about 200 lbs. I?óÔé¼Ôäóm afraid that not eating well is going to take its toll on me. I have been taking vitamins and drinking more water and exercising. Does anyone have any suggestions or help? I need to know what to do or the next step to take. I feel much better now though. So, I guess it?óÔé¼Ôäós been worth it.
I still continue to eat less. My brother has forced me to eat a bit more. I have added two boiled eggs to my diet in hopes of adding fat and protein.
Thanks for your help.
I hope it all made some sense.
Thank you,
Marcos

If I am reading your post correctly, you started at about 235-240 pounds, correct?
An average number of pounds to lose per week is anywhere from 1-4; to lose 4 lbs a week, it only takes a 1000 calorie a day deficit (3500 calories is 1 pound, so that's 7000 calories a week). You are losing weight a little too quickly, at the rate of 4.5 lbs a week, but considering the high weight you started at, I would not be too concerned, yet. I am not sure how tall you are, but as your weight goes into "overweight" instead of "obese," you should expect the weight loss to slow down some.
It would definitely be healthier for you to add some more calories to your day, simply for overall health, energy, and nutrition goes, but from simply a weight loss standpoint, the pounds you are droppign are not too drastic. HOWEVER, as far as building healthy habits goes, you ARE going to have to add more calories, because there is no way for you to sustain a 6-800 calorie a day deficit indefinitely, and if you go from eating 600 calories a day to 2000 calories a day SUDDENLY, well, I'm sure you can guess what's going to happen.

girl anachronism,
hi. thank you for responding.
i started at 238 a couple of months ago. i'm 5'6, so being 200 is still pretty overweight, i hope not obese though.
my whole intention was to lose weight, and fast. for medical reasons i thought i had to.
now i feel like i cannot eat and am enjoying it.
i have been upping my calories slowly to 900, that way i still burn them at the gym and am not gaining weight. i hope to keep losing weight, and making my workout more intense, that way one day i'll be back to normal calories and thin.
i hope that works out.
thanks for your advice.
it has helped!

I've been told never to eat fewer than 1200 calories even if you are morbidly obese. If you exercise regularly and eat 1200 calories you will lose weight very quickly with your current weight and you wont end up with extra skin all over the place that you have to get surgically removed one day. I would say to eat even more calories and just exercise more. Unfortunately, diet and exercise go hand and hand. I never liked that fact, but it's not so bad. Never underestimate healthy foods like broccoli, I eat a pound of that stuff and it's only 200 calories (Just dont add stuff)
Best of luck!

1200 calories is far too little to eat if you are morbidly obese. It will likely result in your body losing too much muscle, exercise or no exercise, which will make the weight more likely to come back on as you get down.
Also, unfortunately, even exercising will not prevent loose skin. I'm only 26, but was over 300 pounds for almost 10 years. Because of my age, my skin will likely stretch back somewhat after a year or two upon reaching my goal, but I'll probably always have some, unless I get it surgically removed. Also, the more quickly you lose the weight, the more likely you are to have loose skin.

i think if you restrict your calories this much you will find sooner or later you will stop losing because your body is gonna go into starvation mode
not to mention the damage you are doing on your musculature and bones .. and heart from the stress of too little nutrition
i hope you get some help to lose your weight in a safer manner
all the luck to you ! please remember you cant undo a lifetime of bad habits in a short period of time .. you will see better long term results if you do things properly

Eat more food. Simple. At 600 calories your body is STARVING TO DEATH. If you continue like this, you won't lose fat but MUSCLE, WATER and eventually INTERNAL ORGANS because that is what your body will be eating away at. Eating so little is KILLING you so please stop.
I don't have your details but inputted values into a calorie intake calculator. I put your age as 25, height as 5ft7, that you moderately exercise 3 times a wk and weight as 200lbs. It said that you should be eating 2300 to maintain and 1800 to lose. If you exercise more than 3 times a wk then you should be eating 2000 at least. You are WAAAAAAAY below this at 600.
When you increase your calorie intake, expect a gain at first because your body has been scared for so long that you're starving, but after this initial gain then you WILL begin to lose.
Basically, if you want to end up killing yourself then continue as you are. Or if you want to lose weight (muscle and water) until your body starts holding onto fat and you begin to GAIN weight and end up heavier than you are right now, then continue as you are.

| Please read the articles on this site, it will explain to you how many calories for your height and weight you should be eating. Eating too little is very unhealthy for you and could lead to an eating disorder.

You are way under eating. I also have lost at a lot of weight recently 100lbs to exact. There was a point when I was under eating as soon as I changed it back min 2000 calories the weight started coming off. Your body will hold back the weight you are trying to loose cause it is in starvation mode. I was 242 when I started the gym in nov 07 and 265 in april 07 and Im' 5-10.5 tall. So I know for a fact you need to eat way more. Good luck with you plan

Harsh, but well said.
Marcoss-
I am concerned also that you are losing where you don't need to. At the low calorie intake you will lose muscles not fat. And in the long run, that is not a good thing, since muscle burns fat. I would add more calories gradually. You don't have to work off every calorie you take in. Your body will need some of those calories to live on.
I know that is not what you wanted to hear. And don't feel alone. I have done the same thing myself. But, eventually it will back fire on you.
Also, you said you wanted to be healthy and started losing weight for health reasons. I don't think the low calorie intake is very healthy. So, think of it as a health goal to eat the right amount of calories and still lose the weight you want to. That way you will form good habits that will last you the rest of your life.

Hi,
I am ashleighand I am new here too. I was really shocked when I read your story. You see I was almost the same weight and possibly the same age( I was 20). I say was because I began the same excact diet as you. No more than 800 calories a day and 600 on days that i didnt work out. I did this for a total of 8 months. I went from 220 - 130. I was pleased but here is where it gets bad. I had the same troubles as you. troubles with eating and not. I began to want to be thinner so I worked out more and continued eating less. I began to get thinner and thinner but started to lose my hair and was focused soley on my weight. I went from 130-120 quickly but it didnt stop there. I began to eat alot sometimes and beat my self up with working it off at the gym. I went from 120-115. I cut out alot of certain foods and would not eat after a certain time and never ever over my calorie limit. I went from 115-109. I was continuing to lose weight and I knew something was wrong. I didnt know how to stop. The something weird happenned i began to eat so much on some days I would make my self sick. I did this off and on until it became a big problem I was scared out of my mind to gain weight so this developed into over excersising and eventually mild bulimia. I ened up putting 60 of the pounds I had lost back on due to bingeing. I didn't give my body enough time to adjust . and when i had lost the weight I didnt know how to eat normally again. Don't do this to yourself. don't rush it and end up with a similar story. take your time relax. you could starve yourself and then your body will get exhausted and try to compensate. muscle take mlore calories to create and takes up less space then fat . feed your muscle and don't obsess. it's not worth it beleive me.
