I've been wondering about one of my friends lately. I'm really not sure what to think. She had a super fast metabolism, and she is very pretty. She's not emaciated, or too bony. However, she said that she hates food. She barely eats, and I understand that she is shorter and smaller than me. I'm putting her at an RMR of around 1200 calories, and she isn't very active.

I know she goes to the bathroom after almost every meal, but I never hear barfing or anything like that. She just...doesn't like food? I have seen her eat roughly 1000 calories in one sitting, and 2 slices of pizza, and all sorts of normal teenage things, but she told me she just doesn't like food. At all, and that she eats things just because she needs too.

I don't know, and I'm sure she knows she's pretty. I tell her consistently, and I never get an odd reaction. I know that eating disorders can also be for other reasons as well though. Maybe I'm just being a crazy friend, but I know if I ask her she'll say no.

Is it possible to dislike food? Arg, maybe I'm just being too protective, but I just anted to know what someone else would think.

For the benefit of anyone reading I want to be clear: the phrase you used above is not a synonym for "she is slim". What it actually means is "in order to maintain her weight she requires more calories than the other person".

Lack of interest in food in itself (if genuine) is not necessarily a sign of 'that' sort of Eating Disorder. I have a male friend who cannot get excited about eating and thinks it a chore and a a waste of time (and equally I can't get excited about the time he wastes on computer-based gaming and drinking in pubs, both of these are wastes of time as far as I'm concerned). He does eat regularly enough, isn't getting too slim and is fairly believable.

However that doesn't prove that your friend isn't purging (or skipping the meals you don't share with them)

When you see her eating so much you could ask her why because it doesn't make sense to me that someone who doesn't like food eats too much of it. But be careful with what you say so you don't offend her. I think it is possible to dislike food but that's not really normal.

I don't think you're too protective, she's lucky to have a friend like you. If she purges after each meal, it is serious but I can't really tell you what to do. You could also go to the bathroom if you're eating out (because don't women always go together?^^) or pay attention to how she looks after she comes back from the bathroom. Are her eyes maybe a bit blood-shot or does she look as if she cried or something?! I always look really bad after purging but maybe that's just me... Anyway, show her you're there for her anytime. Keep an eye on it. I hope your friend is not bulimic...

Thanks so much for the signs. I asked her one time how she managed to eat so much, and she said she was just really hungry! I guess it makes sense that she eats one HUGE meal and then fruits and stuff through out the day. Maybe not entirely healthy, but hey, we're teenagers! Not all of us are trying to become health nuts.

Anyway, thanks again to the both of you!
