Was wondering what everyone does to pass the time when walking on the treadmill? I usually watch tv. But, that is getting very boring with reruns and all. So, I need suggestions. I tried music once and it was ok. But, still boring. Can't wait till it warms up....the great outdoors is calling me....
ps: I hate being cold...so I will not walk outside until it's at least in the 60's

I like music. You can watch a movie if TV is dull. Also, someone suggested walking TO somewhere...Pick out a location on mapquest of somehwere, figure out how many miles it is from where you are, then walk there!!

| Hey, that is a cool idea. I will have to try that tonight. Maybe I can walk to one of my neighboring towns.

I still say music. I listen to hard rock style while exercising. It really motivates me! Or if I am exercising at home I do it during a t.v. show I like from start to finish. But really, a gym is better! Being around others who are exercising is a big booster. I can stay on the cardio equipment way longer at the gym. It's a mental thing!

I nordictrack ski machine for 40-60 minutes a day and I just turn on the radio (have a nice remote) and change it to NPR and listen to the stories. the time flies and then my timer goes off to say I am done. If I want a laugh I listen to the FOX newsradio and listen to their drivel....sometimes my kids come and talk to me while I work out, they pretend to be the trainers on the Biggest Loser....
My husband also comes down to visit...just to talk about day, etc.
Or I figure out what I would do with the latest high number on the lottery....hmmm..that whiles away alot of time..

I listen to my IPOD at the gym. Sometimes I listen to music and sometimes to podcasts.
I also will sometimes do interval training to keep from getting bored.
Instead of walking at 4 miles per hour the whole time, try walking 2 minutes at 3.5 miles per hour and then 2 minutes at 4.5 miles per hour. The average miles is still the same, 4 miles per hour. But, you burn more calories doing intervals and you increase your speed and endurance. The time seems to go faster with the constant changing of speeds.
I am now up to 60 minutes doing 2 minute intervals of 4.3 miles per hour for 2 minutes and then 5.5 miles per hour for 2 minutes, with a few 6 miles per hour thrown in.

Since my last post. I have been walking outside more and breaking up the walking. Sometimes I walk in the afternoon, and then again at night. And I have increased my time as well. I can now get it done allot faster than before.
I also have been doing other exercises. I have started the ab lounger, and if I am not tired after walking then me and my husband go for a bike ride.
So far this has been great for me. Not boring and I don't feel like I am going to the ball and chain anymore.
Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions.

I usually listen to music, but lately I've been fitting in alot of audio books while walking and riding on my stationary bike. It helps to pass the time and since I want to continue on with the book it gives me a reason to hop back on the machine. :)

I love listening to fast-paced music while walking outside. I notice I try to step to the beat so if it's fast, I walk fast. Obviously you can't subconsciously on a treadmill though, since you have to manually control the speed. Maybe they need to come up with a treadmill that will increase/decrease depending on how you're walking. If you're walking close to the front of the treadmill, it increases the speed. Towards the back, it decreases. If you fall off, it shuts off and calls 911 for you.
I can't use a gym. I'm so selfconscious I can't stand anyone watching me work out. I even use my treadmill in a locked room so my kids can't see. Yes, I'm weird. I think I will grow out of that though. I used to do the same thing when I would put in my contacts, and now I don't care if anyone is watching me.
I have a DVD player duct-taped to my treadmill. Sometimes I'll have my laptop duct-taped to it and I would watch online videos through bedroommedia.com. Because it is so warm out I walk outside unless it is raining.

CodeMonkey, my treadmill has one of those things where you attach a clip to your shirt and attach the other end magnetically to the treadmill. If you fall, it shuts the treadmill off. Useful, that. :)
To the OP: MUSIC! That really keeps me involved. I listen to music that most would probably consider to be "fast car" music, but I love it, and it really keeps me going.
I used to exercise and play video games at the same time. The workout went faster, but I also got so involved with the game that I cycled slower. People do it, though, along with TV, but you just have to make sure to stay focused on your workout.
Apart from the warmup and cooldown, I change my resistance on the bike every 30 seconds. This keeps me involved in the workout. You can do the same on a treadmill by adjusting your MPH and incline regularly. It helps the time to pass a bit more quickly.
I've also done voice chatting while on the treadmill. That was not too fun. It was hard to focus on the workout, and I don't really like to talk a lot while I'm out of breath, LOL.
Finally, while this might sound a bit strange, sometimes I role-play while I'm exercising. It takes my mind to another world, and helps the time pass. Whatever works for you. :P

Mine has that as well, but I have it attached to the treadmill itself.

I can probably understand why. Fall behind for just a fraction of a second towards the back of the treadmill and BAM! The exercise becomes so easy that it feels like you must be doing nothing! ;P

| You can visit http://www.walkjogrun.net. They have an awesome website where you can map out your own route in your neighborhood and it calculates the distance, the time depending on how fast you go, and a lot more. You can also save your routes so other members that live near you can view them. I don't believe you have to 'sign up' to use the site, but you may have to in order to save a route. There are more like this, I believe googlemaps has a 'walking' feature. I just like this one because you can just click around the roads you're familiar with and figure out the distance...better than driving around in your car while watching your odometer :)

I personally need to read or do something, I hate the treadmill, and need to keep my self occupied. Though one of my members hooks up his portable dvd player and watches movies while he walks.

Lately most of my walk time has been on a treadmill at the gym. I usually watch one of the tv's they have up infront of the cardio area. On the machines they have a spot where you can plug head phones into and turn to a channel for the tv you're watching. If nothing fun is on I bring my mp3 player and listen to tunes.
When walking outdoors normally I listen to music unless I'm walking with my dog(s). When I'm walking outside and listening to my mp3 player I use a set of ear buds that only has a single ear piece. That way one ear is open to hear the car(s) that is about to run me over.
I've found the best music to listen to is my own band's stuff, but that's just me.
