What's the difference between vegetables and legumes? I used to think they meant the same thing.
Also, how do I know what kind of meat is lean or not? And is red meat bad for you?

Legumes are like beans, lentils, peas... I'm not really sure what the scientific difference is but I know a major difference between legumes and vegtables is the protein content (in which legumes have an extreme high amount of). Sorry that's probably not all that helpful but I'm sure you could google it.
As for meat, the packaging should say whether it's lean meat or not. You can get lean and even extra lean, but the more lean it is, the more expensive.

Ohh, thanks!
Is red meat unhealthy though?

You can figure out whether meat is lean or not by figuring out what percentage of total calories come from fat (if that information is not already on the packaging). If only 20% of the calories come from fat then I would consider it lean.
How to work it out: (number of fat grams) x 900 / (number of calories)
Red meat might be lean. Leaner cuts are indeed more expensive.
Chicken breast is leaner than a thigh, a wing or a drumstick.
Generally red meat is less healthy than white meat, but it depends on what you compare with what: if you are comparing lean part of beef with non-lean part of chicken, the beef cut might be healthier.
You could be right about peas being legumes - but I am not sure, I usually consider them to be vegetables; incidentally not everyone knows that peanuts are also technically legumes, but they do of course share their nutritional profile with tree nuts.

Thanks!
I have another question...
What's the difference between cal. And kcal?
I was reading the nutrition label on this rice cake thing, and it said that 100g was 385 kcal. or something like that. If kcal. is the same thing as normal calories, then I'm never eating those again! I thought those rice cake things were healthy and low in calories, cause they were extremely light, and didn't feel unhealthy..
How much is 100g anyways?

Kilocal and cal are interchangable. Usage has meant that the 'kilo' bit is pretty much dropped except in technical writing.
Whether red meat is bad for you would depend on any predispositions your body might have.
As a veggie, my credentials might be suspect on this matter, but I'd hazard that organically farmed meat is healthy, and the mass-produced stuff is much less nutritional.
Remember, in the UK, the food scientists had farmers feeding their cattle with a mix enriched with infected sheep's brain. How's that for healthy?
And factory farmed poultry has been demonstrated to be nutritionally deficient. So, if you're going to eat meat, do your body a favour and consume the quality stuff.
After which, I should just point out that red meat is supposedly less healthy that poultry and white meats... but it surely must depend on the source and the feeding regime?

What?! I can't believe that rice cake thing was 385 calories per 100g!! I don't even know how much 100g is but I'm guessings each ricke cake stick is that much. WOW. And I thought that was healthy... I could eat a lot of them and still not feel that full! Those rice cake sticks are now on my unhealthy list. Those were yummy.
Infected sheep brain?! Grossness!
I'm going to try to eat more lean meat, and less red meat. I hope that won't be too hard! Though I'm pretty sure I eat a lot of red meat... Hmm..

I'm sure it isn't.
100g is roughy 3.5 Oz.
If your packet of rice cakes has a total of X rice cakes and weighs a total of Y grams, then each rice cake weighs (in grams):
Y/X
and the number of calories in one rice cake is therefore:
Y/X * 3.85

I don't know about the rice cakes, I could never eat very many of those thing, yuck...
But, as far as red meats go...I love them... But, yes, they are unhealthy because of the amount of fat in them.
If you don't eat alot, then no problem. But, if you eat red meat on a everyday basis then you could have a problem.
I have high cholesterol and now only eat red meats two or three times a week. I think by far the best meat for a person, is fish. But, I do eat alot of chicken, turkey and lean pork.
If I do eat red meat. I make it high grade with the least amount of fat. I read somewhere that eating a lean cut steak is actually better for you then hamburger.
So, I would just try to cut back and buy better quality meats.
Plus, there are so many other foods in the world, why limit yourself, you don't have to have meat all the time
Hope this helps some..

Isn't pork (whether it's lean or not) still classified up there with the 'red meats' group? I'm pretty sure it is, but then again I've been wrong lots of times before!

Yes, all pig, lamb and cow meat is 'red meat' and all chicken and turkey meat is 'white meat'
but it doesn't change the assertion that lean red meat could potentially be healthier than (non-lean) white meat
