Hi, howdy and hello! I'm an overweight, overfat, 35yro fella from Tulsa, OK. I've been "large" my entire life and have only recently began to better myself. I stopped smoking for the second time, stopped drinking pop and started going to the gym on January 1, 2008.

The thing that is killing me is:

1. I monitor, or do as well as I can, what I eat.
2. I visit the gym 4-6 times a week which includes 30-40 minutes on the eliptical machine on the interval setting and then resistance training.

but I have yet to shed a single pound. I know that a pound of muscle is about the size of a kitchen sponge where a pound of fat is the size of a red brick, but it is starting to weigh (no pun intended) heavily on me and I feel myself becoming disenchanted and even somewhat depressed about it.

Hello Ian, and welcome!

Are your pants fitting any differently? Just wondering if you might be losing fat but putting on muscle.

If you are monitoring your food, I suggest you post what you eat for a day (everything!) with the quantity and calories and total it up and I'm sure you will get some suggestions from other forum members.

Don't give up! That's great that you quit smoking, soda, and are getting to the gym. You may not have lost weight, but you are certainly healthier!

Thank you Peter!

Yes, I do feel that my clothes are fitting differently than they did. My shirts especially are becoming a tad more loose. I think its the whole looking in the mirror and seeing a fat person staring back at me thats the problem.

As for what I eat in a day, here is an example that I warrant is true and accurate:

1.5 servings Honeycomb cereal    165
1.5 servings skim milk    135
2 peices wheat toast w/peanut butter and cinnamon (no added sugar)    190
16 oz coffee (cream and sweetnlow)    62.9
Smoked turkey(2 slices) sandwich on whole wheat(2 slices) with horseradish mustard(2 tsp)    227.5
1.5 servings Doritos chips    240
1 serving fresh baby carrots    31.5
1 medium apple    71.8
15oz Green Tea with Sweetnlow    0
1/2 med. grapefriut    41
1 pack of Austin Cheddar Cheese crackers    210
1 stick of string cheese    80
10 oz protien shake    210
1 slice smoked turkey    30
10 wheat thins    80
1.5 servings chicken fried rice    360
Total calories for the day = 2134.7

I do know some things I can substitute for better choices, like the cheese and crackers I could swap for fresh veggies (just out of cash between paydays atm, I know it's an excuse, but a valid one) and ditch the Doritos for some other healthy choice. Oh and if you want to know, I currently weigh 310lbs and am 5'11.

You certainly are monitoring yourself well, and that's an important step toward leaning about food, exercise, your body and reaching your goals.

I'd like to suggest that you read the Tutorial, and especially RMR, it's possible that this is the case with you.

I'm moving this topic from New Member Introductions to General Discussion in hopes that you'll get some more input.

Keep at it!
