I would cut my grapefruit here at work and eat it at my desk. Of course the little squirts from digging into my grapefruit would land all over my desk and, more importantly, my computer. I'd have all kinds of grapefruit residue on my monitor and keyboard. Not good.

So I wanted to peel my grapefruit and eat it like an orange. I had some difficulty and read online that you can place your grapefruit in a pot of boiling water for a minute and that would loosen up something to make it easier to peel. Problem is, I don't have a way to "cook" my grapefruit in a pot of boiling water. I do have a microwave though. So, can I nuke the grapefruit for a few seconds and make it easier to peel? Or will it explode?

I can't say I've tried this myself, but my idea is that it won't have the same effect as boiling would.

Have you ever tried just peeling and eating the grapefruit (like you would an orange) without either boiling or microwaving?  I like to eat them this way just fine.  yes, a bit of the slightly bitter white peel will remain (I'm guessing that's why you want to boil/microwave it - to make this easier to remove).  but i personally don't find it unappealing enough to deter me.  more fiber too!

Heh, you going to clean up the mess if it makes one?

What I did was spend more time with a knife getting rid of the white stuff around the grapefruit. I think I need to pre-boil and peel them and put them in baggies before bringing them to work. Yeah, that's the ticket.

or you could just get a bowl, heat the water till it's boiling and then set the grapefruit in there for a minute.  that is, if you forget to do it in the morning at home...

I have to hear where this one goes............................................

I just got my box of red grapefruit, that the school kids sell for a fundraiser.   They are always the best grapefruit, oranges or pears I can find!    My mouth just waters thinking about them :yum:

I love taking them to work...........and I do spend the time to clean them up at home.   Here's what I do...........I cut off the two "ends", then cut the grapefruit into quarters.   With a sharp knife, I slice the white pithy stuff off at the point of each grapefruit quarter.   Then I cut each quarter-grapefruit into 3 slices............then (again it must be a sharp knife) I slice the fruit away from the peel.   That leaves about 12 "sections" with no white pith to be bitter.    It tastes as sweet as eating a candy bar to me!   Then I can eat them at my desk, with a fork, and no squirty mess on my desk or computer.

Hey MudMan,

I can't imagine that anyone who loves to go out and roll around in the mud on weekends would mind a little citrus juice at work!

Actually, I'd think it might explode if you did it long enough, just like a balloon blown up too far. Should be fun, just stand back!

As an aside, I often spill my OJ on the carpet here and there and over time it attracts dirt and makes a very dark spot. But it comes right off with water. I'd expect that any citrus juice (without added sugar) would clean up easily simply with water.

Now, getting even further aside, I used to clean my (glass) PC screen with Diet Pepsi every morning. I'm drinking it all the time, and so have learned that it's as good as Windex on most everything! Including, I'm sure, grapefruit juice!

Could I just inject a little sanity here and suggest that the grapefruit would be better peeled and consumed (whether boiled or no) away from the hardware?

Back when I was a proper engineer, I had a CADD designer who ate all sorts of stuff at his station. The repair figures for his hardware outstripped those for the rest of my engineers combined! Crumbs, jam (jello?) - you name it.

If you take care of the equipment CM, perhaps they'd split the difference on the reduced servicing and give you a raise?

Back in the '70s when I used to travel around the country with our tech guys installing computer systems, and the boss was always drinking a Coke. The "real thing" as in sticky, not like my Diet Pepsi.

One day at NASA mission control outside Houston someone knocked his Coke over and it spilled all over the keyboard. They wiped it up, and everything looked fine.

But the next morning when the room was filled with NASA officials who'd come to view the official acceptance testing of our equipment, all the keys stuck when you pushed them! The test had to be put off for two hours while they took the keyboard apart and cleaned every key and contact.

Beware the grapefruit!
