I enjoy houmous as much as the next man (or woman) but do be aware that it's high in fat calories and therefore should be eaten in moderation.
The calories from most proprietary houmous are 80% fat.
I like it best with a piece of wholegrain pitta bread (which evens out the fat calories).
It amounts to about 30% fat calories when eaten that way (30 grams of houmous).
Bears thinking about...

Instead of the normal hummus, try this recipe:
1 lg eggplant - roasted in skin until it is very tender
2 cloves garlic
1 med onion sauteed in chicken broth until tender
1 lg red pepper roasted and peeled
4 Tbs fat free (low fat) cream cheese
salt and pepper
red pepper flakes
lemon juice
1 Tbs Olive oil
Once the eggplant and pepper has cooled, peel and place in food processor with the rest of the ingredients. Blend together. Serve just like hummus.
I add other herbs to it. In the summer, I love basil in there. In the winter it is easier to use cilantro or flat leaf parsley. I usually use a fat free tortilla (wheat) that i crisp in the oven to dip in, or veggies.
Very low fat, and healthy. Mostly veggies and some calcium.
Good eating.

I was interested, nay rapt, right until I read 'chicken broth', lillae -
No good for a confirmed, hippy-dippy tree-hugger like me! (or for the chicken, for that matter....)

NevD. I can sort of underdstand that.
Here is a suggestion. Try using veggie broth instead. It will still be very low cal and very healthy.
It is a fabulous dip. I'll have to search for my bean dip and salsa recipe for you if you are interested.

| yeah, if you are going to be adding tahini, you really don't need the olive oil. But you may have to add extra water or lemon juice to thin it out.

I would get a great Black Bean Hummus from Costco but they don't always have it in stock so I went searching on my own for a tasty facsimile. Here's a really great base recipe for a tasty and much lower fat style Hummus. I like to add more garlic and lemon juice and I've never garnished with the olives. I like to dip raw carrots and celery in too!
(Found this on the Internet I think at AllRecipes a while ago)
Black Bean Hummus Dip
?é?À 1 clove garlic
?é?À 1 (15 ounce) can black beans; drain and reserve liquid
?é?À 2 tablespoons lemon juice
?é?À 1 1/2 tablespoons tahini
?é?À 3/4 teaspoon ground cumin
?é?À 1/2 teaspoon salt
?é?À 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
?é?À 1/4 teaspoon paprika
?é?À 10 Greek olives
DIRECTIONS:
1. Mince garlic in the bowl of a food processor. Add black beans, 2 tablespoons reserved liquid, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, tahini, 1/2 teaspoon cumin, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper; process until smooth, scraping down the sides as needed. Add additional seasoning and liquid to taste. Garnish with paprika and Greek olives.

I had a recipe at one time that was a mixture of chickpeas, fat free yogurt, and lemon juice, and it was fantastic.
I'll look for it again and post when i find it.
