I've been trying to come up with a solution to this, because I really like Indian food. I would just avoid dishes with lots of sauce, so I've been going for biryani and dry tandoori dishes. I don't get too worked up about it though when I have been out for meals, after all it's just one meal out of weeks of being good.

I would go for a vegetable, prawn or chicken-breast-based dish (rater than beef or lamb).

If they give you lots of rice, you don't have to clean your plate. Brown rice would be healthier but it probably isn't available in most restaurants (still watch portion size - remember that rice is cheap that's why they're giving you so much).

Poppadoms are relatively low in calories (300 calories per 100g but they are light). On the other hand try to avoid Naan bread or Chapatis.

As far as relishes and sauces go try to aim for something vegetable based or tomato based.

(by the way they probably use oil or coconut in the curry sauce, despite it being tomato-based).

Try to avoid deep-fried stuff like samosas and bahjis.

I think it's pretty impossible to avoid ghee being used in Indian food. :nono:

yeah you're probably right. might just give myself the meal off from all this healthy eating and have a tikka massala, i've been pining for it all week. can still watch the rice and not have a naan bread so wont be going off the rails. i cant see what difference one meal will really make when i've been good all week.
