[size=This may not be on-topic for this forum, but I didn't know where to post this. but this was the most active forum.

For about 1 1/2 years now I've had a *serious* alchohol problem. I've also noticed during this time that my face and stomach have become much noticeably fatter. Yet, I've only put on about 10 pounds. What's going on? Can alcohol make you fatter without putting on weight?]

a pound of muscle occupies the same space as five pounds of fat. Perhaps you lost muscle and gained fat (in addition to the 10lb of fat you know that you have gained).

I remember reading somewhere that the "beer belly" is not just additional fat, but that beer (or alcohol, I'm not sure) specifically put the fat on the waist.

If these things are true, how can I reverse the process?

Without wishing to sound blas?â?®, you need to use alcohol as a pleasant relaxation mechanism, not a way of life.

I have no way of knowing what you meant by the word 'serious' when you applied it to alcohol, but if you feel it controls you, then seek suitable help.

If you mean that you've just been drinking too much too often, then use the stuff as a reward.   I've often advised people losing weight to have an alcohol 'treat' at weekends only, as a reward for eating well and exercising during the week.   That seems to work for most, but not if you spend all weekend over-indulging, of course!

If your problem is with beer, then try a glass of wine with a meal instead.  And if your social round takes you into bars all the time, you'll need to review that, too.

Good luck with your efforts.
