Mainting My Loss........?

In January I participated in a 4 month biggest loser contest at work. I won dropping almost 30 lbs.  I ate low fat and low calorie foods. Limited my calorie intake to a max of 2200. I did some type of cardio 4 or 5 times a week. I mainly ate lots of lean meats and veggies. I snacked when I was hungry, but on fruits or granola bars. I tracked my calorie intake and activities like a hawk.

This summer I became an avid cyclist, something that started last year and really took off this summer. I have logged 2300 miles on my road bike. I have done several 100 mile one day rides. When I ride it is rarely liesurely. I like to push myself physically. I even ran a 5k this past month. The weight kept coming off this summer as I continued to eat better and less, ride, and run. I am down 60 lbs total to date. I feel great and look great.

What is the freakin point? Well I have been eating much more this summer as I have been so active. I am worried that as winter rolls around I will gain weight. How much should I be eating? Do I stay at or around my RMR number? Now that I am phsyically fit what kind of eating habits should I have? How many calories? Protien? Carbs? I don't want to go back, but want to be healthy too.

For the Record I am male, 32, 6'3'' & 177 lbs. I was 236 lbs Jan 4th 2006. As the season changes I likely will do some type of cardio 2 to 3 days a week. Either running on a treadmill or the elliptical at the gym.

Congratulations on your loss. [I'm currently cycling 9 miles a day just to get around town and I can relate to getting a kick out of pushing oneself. I sometimes wear a HR monitor to ensure I'm working hard enough]

With your current stats, your maintenance calories: no activity 2206, exercising 1-3 times a week 2527. Optimal fat loss at 15% below that (i.e. 2148 calories). If you're impatient for loss, eat a bit less (but no lower than your unadjusted RMR, which is 1838).

You might also like to consider resistance training, to alternate with your cardio exercise.   Put on a bit of muscle and you'll burn more calories, ergo less chance of regaining.

Yeah, that is great.  Well done.

I have to agree, cycling is the best!  I started triathlons when I was 37 and retired last year:cool:  I did lots of 10km fun runs and two half marathons (despite all the training I never lost weight, just toned:confused:)  but now my main focus is riding.  We usually do a 60-70km (sorry dunno what is in miles:wink:) ride each weekend and a hilly ride at least one other day.  I got a carbon bike last year and just love it.  Back in May I did a 114km event - it was tough, but a wonderful achievement.  It's great to get outdoors.  We live near a small freeway that has a great bike path along it that leads off into some great bush tracks, so tomorrow it's onto the mountain bike for some 'mucking around'.   who says I'm too old?:tongue:

Thanks Nevd (I already have you pegged as the 'stats' man!)  With my 'significant' birthday due in about 5 months, I'm doing everything I can to stay in denial!:grin::wink:
