I have just started to take ground flax. So far, I have put it in oatmeal, spicy V8, and yogurt. It's not bad, but I'm looking for other healthy ways to mix it up. Anyone have any ideas?

I have heard that if you are going to use flax seed it should be ground because our bodies do not process whole flax seeds very well.

Whenever I make a salad...any kind, I throw in some ground flax seed. It is wonderful in a low fat caesar salad....pass on the croutons and use the ground flax seed instead.

I also buy flax seed spaghetti and breakfast pitas.

I think you can put flax in just about anything.

You could cook it in meat.

Put it on a sandwhich.

Mix it in with veggie dip.

pudding/yogurt

soup

peanut butter

Of course you couldn't "hide" a lot of it in those things, but...anyway, that is just what I have heard.

I notice a difference when i am not taking flaxseeds...my nails are weaker.

You cannot use flaxseeds (oil, ground, or whole) in high heat.  In other words, always add it to things after they have been cooked.  The high temperatures used in cooking damages the essential omega fats.

I have a few flaxseed recipes for flaxseed crackers, and muffins.  A really great place for FLAX ideas are at annlouise or just type in fat flush into google and there is a forum where there are tons of great recipes.

I like using Flaxseed Oil, Apple cider vinegar, and lemon as a salad dressing.

I bought a bag of whole flaxseeds at Trader Joe's a few months ago.  I was planning to add it to various foods such as yogurt and oatmeal.  I bought it whole thinking that this would help the fats from going rancid.  I keep it in the fridge, and the plan *was* to grind some each time I was going to use it.

What has happened instead is that there is a bag of flaxseeds that sits in my fridge and that I never touch...grinding it is too much of a hassle.

My question is, is it OK to just pre-grind it all? Or will it gradually go bad?

It will eventually go bad but I don't know how long it might take. And keep it in the fridge.

Also, remember that flax seeds have omega fatty acids.  I believe it's omega six, but I'm not positive.  They are used (in oil or powdered form) by a lot of folks who cannot stand the...er...repeat problems of salmon oil tablets.

Incidentally did you know that in the UK, flaxseed iscalled linseed?

If Nir had not stated that flaxseed is called Linseed I would never have gotten any here in Uganda or even SA.  We know of it as Linseed as well.

I hadn't a clue!

I used to put linseed oil on the leather straps on my falcon's legs years ago when I was a falconer. And now I eat flaxseed!

I think it's the more industrial? one that used on your falcons straps, not the one you consume.  I used to clean my father's golf clubs every Sunday for him and rubbed the sam Linseed Oil on his woods.

At my grocery store they have all kinds of seeds and such packaged by Bob's Red Mill, all in a rack. EXCEPT the ground flax seed. Because it needs to be kept fresh, it alone is found in the refrigerated section.

Perhaps it's that way in your store, too.

I use a coffee bean grinder. You can find them at any walmart store. Works great, I grind 1/4 cup a day and use it twice on cereal or whatever else.
