Hello everyone. I am 26 yrs old and i weigh 195, also I am 5`7. I started out weighing 242 or so about a year ago. This is the thing. I have been feeling like im losing weight even after hitting my plateau but i dont think im reaching my goal fast enough...im not being greedy but ive been stuck at the 195 to 198 lbs range for a long time now. I eat this on average, breakfast consists of 1 cereal bar everyday, lunch is usually a salad or subway with no mayo, all the veggies and only chicken...i will eat 9 inches and then by 3 pm ill eat the rest. When i get home from work, ill eat something like chicken and rice or something from a frozen foods that would have no more than 800 calories..but this is just the beggining of my story because i excersice like crazy but not because i feel like i must, but because i actually like it. I am athletic and do look very different than when i first started, so i like to do cardio for one hour and then ill do three different kinds of abs machines that really work them hard and ill
do 2 or 3 different leg machines. After that ill pick out 4 to 6 different machines for weight lifting and that would then be the end of my work out...every machine consists of 3 sets which include 10 to 15 different reps. Now my question is, why am i not losing that much weight since i do all of this, keep my calorie intake under 1800 and thats all good food too except for the weekend where i do drink and eat
, not whatever i want but i do allow myself more freedom to eat.Last edited on 5 Sep 2006 07:48 pm by webstar

After reading your post I can see that you are on your way to gaining it all back.
Plateau? Plateau is a BS notion. The keyword to plateau is PLATE. You are putting too much on it.
obvioulsly you are spinning out of control and you are looking for excuses instead of facing reality. YOU ARE STILL EATING TOO MUCH!! That is all you need to know.
Go to an online metabolic calculator and you will see that you art still chowing down. Get with the program before you blow it!

| How can I possible be eating too much? I watch what i eat and when i eat it and i have been eating 1800 calories or less. Plus the fact that I do 1 hour of cardio religously every day plus at least 30 minutes of weight lifting and leg and abs excersices. This is a lot of work out and No I dont feel like I over do it because i am never in pain unless i lift a lot which i think im going to start doing because it really makes me feel like im getting somewhere when i do 30 minutes of weightlifting compared to one hour of cardio. I eat well too, no junk food, soda or juice. Yesterday for example I ate, 220 calorie power bar for breakfast. I chicken salad with vinigarette dressing which is very low calories and for dinner i ate a piece of chicken with steamed carrots and a little white rice. For a snack, i ate some grapes. This is a typical day for me and to tell you the truth i thought i would get a little more help from this forum since ive always really counted on it for information but youre right when i say im making excuses. Something in what im doing is wrong and waiting for people to reply is an excuse so i am going to work out more and harder for a month and see what happens.

Webstar,
At 195 pounds the RMR calculator estimates that you should burn around 2000 calories a day doing just about nothing. It's just a rough estimate, but it makes me think that perhaps you have been eating so little that you have greatly slowed down your metabolism.
Please be sure to read What It Takes to Lose It All in the Tutorials.

| Thanks for the information. It just seems really difficult now you know. I mean, im never hungry or thirsty. I drink plenty of water and eat right but im never hungry. When im hungry i eat, but i happen to eat lots of good things. When i eat things that are not so good, i limit the portions. I say difficult not because of all the workouts and time it takes to go to the gym and stuff but because there seems to be this perfect window of oppurtunity to loose weight and thats it you know. Its not as simple as eat right and work out and you will loose it......dont get me wrong either, i am loosing weight but at a very slow rate when compared to how much long i work out for. I do very much appreciate all the input from everyone though.

You are never hungry? Amazing, I have never heard anyone (in these weight loss forums) say that besides me.
I can easily pour my OJ when I get up and then get busy on my PC and not want to stop for food till 2 pm. That's very unhealthy, so I have to pretty much make myself eat on a regular schedule.
I don't know what causes this but it started when my eating disorder was severe and I've just never had a normal appetite since. It's not that I have to force the food down or that I don't enjoy eating. It's just that I don't have the feeling of hunger to motivate me to eat.
A few times a year when I haven't eaten and I'm passing by some good looking or good smelling food I get a feeling of hunger and it's so unusual it seems special and odd to me.

Hi Webstar,
It sounds like you are doing great with the diet and exercise - you've lost 50lbs!
With all the weight training you are doing, I wonder if you are putting on a lot of muscle? Muscle is much heavier than fat, so it can disguise the progress that you're making. Do you measure yourself in other ways, like waist or hip circumference, or body fat percentage?
If you are still losing weight, keep at it, even if it's at a slower rate. You'll get there.

Congratulations on your progress this far! I agree that you might be eating too little. You need to check out how many calories you need on the free calculator on this site. Also, you need to eat at least 5 small meals a day (grazing) to keep your metabolism burning - you don't want your body to go into starvation mode. Then again, you don't want to eat too much. You want to create a deficit with diet and exercise.
You might also be getting exercise burn out. Try doing 30 minutes of cardio at least 6 days a week and do it after your weights. For weights you might want to do chest and shoulders and back one day, legs and butt the next day, and biceps and triceps on the third day - abs every other day. Then take a day off. Repeat the process for the next 3 days.
You might also need to increase the intensity of your exercise program. I got a trainer to switch me up when I reached a plateau. You might also want to cross train - try bike riding, hiking, swimming.
Remember, the body adapts to whatever you are doing and will hold on to the fat as hard as it can. If you don't change what you are doing frequently, you will not lose weight. You must keep your body guessing.
Another thing that works is to eat both carbs and high quality proteins. Check out Tom Venuto's e-book "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle". Tom is a nutrition guru and, if you follow his advice, you can't help but burn the fat.
Good luck! I know you can beat that plateau. Just remember you have to really want it to get it!
