i noticed recently an old friend of mine who use to be an University sprinter, who was fit and slim once upon a time but now has gained so much weight and chubby ?

is it because once they are released from their daily exercise regime - they no longer mentally wants to stay that way ?

such a pity.

even if their calorie intake has not increased one bit since their exercising/training days, if they stopped (or reduced) their training without also reducing their intake then they would be at a calorie surplus. Depending on the size of that surplus that gets them to gain fat. A calorie surplus of 500 calories a day translates to gaining 1lb per week that's 50lb a year. Even a more modest calorie surplus will be noticeable given enough years.

If the previously athletic person reduces food intake in step with their reduced activity - eating the appropriate amount of food for an inactive person - then they would not have gained fat.

We all need to eat. It is just about eating the right amount: you gain weight at a surplus and you lose weight at a deficit. This surplus or deficit is measured against your actual energy needs. Those energy needs do change depending on your lifestyle (such as how active you are - and there is a big difference between a sedentary person and an athlete)

Their body shape would have changed a little though, muscles that are not being used atrophy (becomes weaker and smaller) over time.

hi nir,

i agree but there is also call metabolism that burns the calory intake as we grow. is that not also part of the factor why as these athletes when they leave their profession, chances are they grow 'fat' is there.

Not all the athletes put on weight back. I was an athlete and my metabolic weight has not gone down.

Although I am a vegeterian and I prefer most fruits and vegetables raw.

I drink a lot of water. I love ginger and garlic. I dont like to use lift. All of these add up to the traits of a naturally-slim people.

Nir,

That was a good post. I like the emphasis on protein and fat. (and fat isn't what makes you fat too). I usually gun for about 25-30% carbs, 30-40% fat and 30-40% protein.
