Hey everyone,

I figured I'd post in this forum since I'm not the biggest fan when people sugar coat things. In my opinion when people are brutally honest it can be hurtful but is usually helpful in the long run.

I'm 5' 6" 22 year old male and 160lb. I started losing weight when I was 225lb about a year ago. According to a scale I got on Amazon my body fat varies from 17.5-18.5%. I have recently enjoyed running a lot and do weights when I am not feeling up for a run. I usually run 5.25 miles at a time around a 9:30 min/mile pace. I did a longer (9.5 mile run) recently at 10:45 min/mile pace.

I am posting because I need that added push to exercise harder. The difference in how I feel on days I exercise and don't exercise really is night and day. I know I have 10-15lb left to lose and that loss will help me run longer and faster, I just need a way to step up my game.

The way I usually keep up my routine is by having this thought in my head as I work out: "The emotional pain of me quitting will be much worse than the physical pain of me finishing this workout". That usually works pretty well.

It's not only an emotional pain from you not doing your workouts on the days you dont feel up to it. It will be a physical pain too. Take it from me. I am just starting my journey and am in the shoes you were. (AKA 225 pounds and wanting to loose) I commend you on loosing and everything.. that's great to hear! but keep in mind how you felt when you were heavier. probly wasn't all that great.. and you will get that back if you dont keep going! I have a lot of back stress and nerv damage and when I hit my peak of 225 I had major issues with my health.. and that is what has kept me going.. looking at what I had issues with and my grandparents issues in their later years in life has really helped me do everything I can to keep loosing weight through all the things i have going on.
Even when you feel like you dont want to... do something to help burn those calories and keep doing what you need to. :)

Exercise is fantastic for its own sake, I do a lot of it myself (about 2 hours a day - I have the time as I do not work). I am a similar height to you (5'5") and am 117lb.

But what if I had a job or other commitments and did not have the time to exercise 14 hours a week (which in reality is much more time as I have to get to and from the facility). What if I was recovering from an operation or had an injury and was not allowed to exercise? Am I going to be fat again? (my top weight was 165lb and I was there for about 8 years - but this is some time ago and being slim has been "the new normal" for the last 6 or 7 years).

So what am I saying? I am saying that your post did not talk about food. In the diet and exercise equation, exercise is 20% and diet is 80%.

Make sure to put some leg work where it pays more dividends and commit to eating right even when you are not "feeling up" to it. You'll be the right size and if you also make the right food choices you will vastly improve your health prospects too.

Thanks for the reply Nir. I started to change my eating habits a couple weeks ago. For the past few months before then I alternated between 160-165 eating about 3000-3500 calories a day. I was able to maintain my weight because I was running a lot. Now that I have started trying to lose weight again I have been eating between 1400-2000 calories a day.

You're right, that extra snack can completely cancel out the 5 miles I ran in a given day.

Nir's comment about excersize being 20% and diet being 80% is so right!!! I have NO time to excersize.. not unless I want to completely burn myself out. and that's not any better to do to yourself. but I have changed my eatting habits a lot and I think that plus drinking water, mixed with the labor of my job which is only 4 hours a day... it has made me loose ten pounds just by changing those few little things. :)

Completely agree camarogurl. If your diet is off it can screw everything up. An extra candy bar/snack a day can lead to a pound a week.

For many people it is a matter of setting priorities. Most people choose hedonistic pleasures over a lifetime of good health.

The causes of obesity are many but IMO it starts with our empty and morally bankrupt and greedy society.

When is see some fat mother neglecting the needs of her child and feeding it junk I want to slap her pig face.

We are a society drowning in fattitude. Fattitude is greed, lust, pride, avarice, jealousy, and gluttony along with denial. Fattitude in contagious.

Somebody needs to slap the fat out of Paula Deen and her fellow foodies and fans.
