Here's a picture of where my BMI has been in the last 12 months - that's right, always in the healthy range, but I did not like those quick and unexpected gains back in June and late July. I've now had about 4 months below BMI ~20. My target range is BMI 19.5-20.5 (or 117-123lb) and I've been below that for a couple of months. I currently do some simplified couning (a substitute for calorie counting) and over the last couple of months I have cautiously increased (in fact almost doubled) my food intake (300g to 550g - only counting calorie-dense foods). Increases will continue cautiously and I expect to actually experience some weight gain during this challenge period. Other food-related objectives include moderating my exposure to buffets - these are currently down to just once a week (from a 3-a-week peak not long ago) and I'm hoping to get them down to once every 2 or 3 or 4 weeks. I am also sometimes munching on food (for example popcorn) for a high proportion of the day and maybe I want to curtail that (we'll see) SW 52.64 (115.9lb) GW 54.48 (120.0lb) Height 65 inches I plan to weigh-in on Wednesdays. |

Though I find it hard to find the time to post, I am determined this is going to be the year I reach my goal weight. Being in the challenge makes me more mindful and less likely to put my goals to the side. Small goals at a time seem to work well for me. Nir, I hope you're feeling better today and didn't catch some kind of bug. UTIs are very rare in men under 50, but I have been a high risk patient ever since being instructed to self-catheterise myself mid-2007 onwards. In the interim period I've also had 5 or 6 operations and yet it took 5 years of being 'high risk' to develop this. Apparently the bug in question is E-coli in 95% of cases. Now that the anti-biotics have kicked in, normal service has been resumed, though this episode is making me more careful the way I do things - for example I find myself washing my hands before using the loo! |

This week I started to weigh-in at 51.5kg which "reminded" me to increase intake (from 550g to 600g as of Saturday May 5th). The bottom line though is that lacking energy is now but a fading memory, gaining muscle is a nice 'abstract concept', gaining fat is not something I am particularly keen on, my "goal weight" of 54.5kg (120lb) represents a weight that I am prepared to see on the scale if it is the "price" of more muscle but otherwise I don't crave it. I don't really like change and that includes change on the scale. I feel that I ought to continue increasing my intake (gradually) for as long as my weight continues to be slipping (however slowly it does this) to prevent a situation where I return to underweight (BMI 18.5, 50.37kg, 111lb - about 4lb away) as I will not put up with being underweight and I do not want to need to take drastic action. I think it is possible that my most recent "weight slippage" is down to my decision to eat out less often (now aiming for a buffet once a fortnight or less often) or a subtle reduction in seeking junk food. Sorry... totally forgot to weigh AND post on Tuesday! CRAZY BUSY 'round here and I've been under the weather some. BUT... I weighed the Thursday after starting this challenge...May 3rd..... and was down 2 pounds.... a BIG surprise for me. So, as of THEN... I was at 132. I have been eating differently (not great) for the past week... company.... party planning (and taste-testing recipes for said party....200 people coming), packing food for oldest son's tennis tourney.... after going grocery shopping hungry (BIG no-no So, Nir... you can leave my numbers the same until then, if you want to. |

This week I've not done anything substantially different from 'normal'. Although now all but a distant memory, this week did feature a Red Hot Buffet on Thursday (a moment on your lips, a lifetime on your hips?). On Sunday I ate pub food (chicken, salad, dressing - allegedly a 380 calorie meal) and my weigh-ins are hinting at another sodium hit. I've been "counting 600g" since May 5th. My weight is shifting upwards and that is fine and there are no adjustments required. This analysis just highlights how sensitive I am to change (of any kind), at the end of the day this increased weight is still lower than my start weight for the challenge. I will do this if it isn't too late... I've been dieting since the start of may anyways (april 29th is when I started). 185 I had a week of eating great and even managed to slip in a few walks. So far things have been moving well so I really can't complain. I know that 1-1.5 lbs. loss a week is really good, it's just that it takes so long to actually see any difference. I guess I'm just feeling a bit impatient to lose the baby weight and get back to the weight loss goals I was pursuing a year ago. I'll get there eventually I know. |

Still at 600g (since May 5th) and don't want to change that number upwards. May consider adding healthy uncounted things for example yesterday added an entire uncounted avocado. My last buffet was May 10th i.e. 20 days ago CW 52.48 (115.6lb) LW 52.58 (115.8lb) SW 52.64 (115.9lb) GW 54.48 (120.0lb) If I take a 6-month view it would appear I was "at goal weight" in late January and early February, but my eating pattern was unsatisfactory, the main priority I saw for myself at that point was to stop the daily volume-eating of a 3-4lb salad. I was also not tracking my intake and probably under-eating so I was not really maintaining my goal weight but just transitioning through it on the way down. Last buffet on May 31st (exactly 3 weeks after the last one and hoping to maintain this sort of gap between them). I ate slowly and mindfully for 3 hours, my post-meal weight was "only" 1.5kg (3lb) more than my pre-meal weight and I was not in pain or feeling stuffed after the meal which is highly unusual for me after a buffet of any kind, something of a first! In fact I counted "200 grams" for a final meal (normally I am "repenting" by not eating any more food that day) Using the same two digital scales every morning helps to take out the mystery. One of them is consistent and the other has radically dropped the last 3 days but that's fine it is probably just working its way towards a "low battery" indicator. 180 lbs. Well I started off this week very strong but the weekend was pretty horrible (Sunday brunch buffet, french deli, and farmer's market treats). June is our rainiest month in Calgary so I haven't been getting out as much with the kids. I've tried to put music on while I clean so I can at least shake my booty a little and feel like I've tried. I'm quite sleep deprived right now so I'm only devoting a sketchy 10 minutes to weight training each day (just body weight is enough right now.) I've been googling "thinspiration" to remind myself why I'm trying to lose weight. |

At the beginning of this challenge I predicted that this would be the 2-month period during which I'd finally experience weight gain. I froze intake at '600' and decided that further additions would be non-counted items (like avocado). Yet here we are past the halfway mark with unremarkable gains (and I do want to gain some muscle) so I think that as of today intake shall go up to 650. This against a backdrop of food inflation which means that raw peanuts and muesli are more scarce in my 1-person economy so this is now mainly an oats-based diet (by calories as well as by weight I am now eating more oats than vegetables, who would have thought). There's actually been a lot of temptations at work (admittedly some I have shared in), but most days I try to stick to my healthy food that I pack from home. I pack salads and fruits for lunch and have nuts for a snack if I get hungry. |

With continued gains (having now seen 54kg on the scale) I was torn between keeping intake at 650g and reducing to 600g. As of Sunday July 1st I've decided to be at 625g to 'moderate' my gains. I don't know what happened this final week. I just went completely out of control eating every #%@&! processed thing in sight. Thankfully I still got some exercise in but it was still very discouraging after spending this whole challenge being so good. I thought that I was past that sort of thing. Oh well, a new week a new challenge to look forward to. 177.2 |
