I wasn't sure if I was posting this in the right section but here it is!

Should I be taking a multi vitamin? I know it seems vitamins have been in the spot light in the past few months saying the good and the bad. I am worried I am not getting what I need in what I eat and while losing weight and excising. So should I be taking a multi vitamin? Is it that important that I should be? Or should I just continue as I have been without taking them.

Thanks~

It is a good idea to eat a healthy diet which includes a variety of vegetables, fruits, beans and seeds and this way you can get almost all vitamins and minerals (the exceptions is B12 as this is only found in animal products, and vitamin D which is mostly obtainable from the sun but also some animal products). If you eat some animal products then you don't need to worry about B12.

The amount of vitamin D found in a multi-vitamin is usually not sufficient (for someone who is not getting the right amount of sun - perhaps because of where they live) so let's leave the vitamin D discussion out of it (because that is a different supplement)

We all need some omega 3 fats, but for technical reasons it is not possible to include them in a multi, so they are only available as a separate supplement (and in any event do not 'count' as vitamins or minerals).

I'll say what I am doing right now:
1000mg fish oil capsules x 3 a day
5000IU of vitamin D (D3) - just 3 times a week
generic A-Z vitamins/minerals - just 3 times a MONTH
plus a healthy diet(!)

So in my case I am generally trusting my healthy diet to get me almost everything, and am only taking the multi on the 1st, 11th and 21st of the month as a bit of just-in-case "insurance".

So why do I do that? why don't I take a multi every day? Well unfortunately most multi vitamins contain too much of some of the stuff! If this was a water-soluble vitamin like vitamin C then it would not be an issue, but more of an issue with some others.

(If I was more well-off I might buy a quality multi like http://www.drfuhrman.com/library/article10.aspx and then I would be able to take it every day.)

Have you taken vitamins? I recommend buying a book called Nutrisearch comparative guide to nutritional supplements or if you don't have time I recommend its editors choice, Usana. I'm using it right now and even though Im working 12hours a day, I still have energy and endurance to go to the gym and do some workout. If you need help I can guide you. =)

Just in case anyone is reading the above at face value, Usana is a multi-level marketing company and the recomendation book is closely tied with the company, read more here:
