There is a such thing as "jogging in place" where you move your legs as if jogging but you still remain in that one place. My question is - What if you do this same thing while sitting or lying down? If I were to stay seated or if I lied down but if I still moved my legs really fast in jogging (or running) motion, shouldn't I still burn the same amount of calories (or close to it or perhaps even more) as I would if I were standing up and doing it in place? Does it really matter if you're standing up or not when you do it? Because staying seated or lying down when doing this would certainly be a lot easier. |

KL wrote:Because staying seated or lying down when doing this would certainly be a lot easier. Your answer is right there in the question. It is a lot easier, you are exerting yourself less and burning fewer calories. You will have to spend a lot longer doing the exercise to burn the same number of calories (more hours). Some of the health benefits of walking and jogging come from the weight bearing nature of the exercise - this helps with the strength and density of your bones. A sitting-down exercise will be less effective for this. If you want to do some sitting-down exercises, think about an exercise bike - at least you can set some resistance so your legs work harder moving the wheel. Still not as weight-bearing as a standing-up exercise. |

I would still be curious how many calories you could burn doing this for like an hour or so but there's no way on the internet to look that up for this particular exercise. It might still be around the average number of calories I want to burn daily/weekly in order to lose the weight I want to lose. |

buy a Heart Rate monitor with a "calories burned" function. Configure it with your particulars (age, weight, height etc.). Wear it and do your exercise - it will tell you (an estimate of) how many calories you have burnt. You will be able to compare different exercises. It won't be too expensive and if it satisfies your curiosity it may be worth your investment |
