I am new to this site. I have been wanting to lose weight that I have gained since I had multiple surgeries. I cannot exercise much so that does not help my situation. Does anyone know what type of diet would be good for me? Any help would be appreciated. |

To lose weight you need to be at a calorie deficit. Additionally a diet that emphasizes healthy foods (like vegetables, beans and fruit) and de-emphasizes junk will confer additional health benefits besides weight-loss and so will be "good" for you in other ways. A good start is to read the Tutorial |

I too am new as of 10 mins ago to this site. It's so hard to find a place to talk with others and have a buddy system kind of thing. I just became a gramma yesterday for the first time :). I seen pics of me with my daughter and son-in-law with the new baby, and omgosh I was so devastated at myself I just am sick atm with it. I have disabilities that do not allow me to exercise so its tough getting motivated to try and better myself. I have starved myself, bad idea but it worked for a while. I have tried nutri systems way back when but all they give you to eat is pudding with amino acids and tell you to eat healthy...well duh. I have been on weight watchers meeting and my hubby actually lost 50lbs but me only 4....they are good but the lack the social connections for those online that cannot get out or not very often. We need help too. I have used Jenny Craig and lost 44lbs in a year, then it just stopped, they weren't willing to lower my calorie intake from the food so I gave it another year at the same stand still and weight, then I stopped wasting my time and money with them... Since then I have put back on most of the weight and am just looking at starving again cus it gives results but I know I shouldn't cus it hurts you. I have the ideas of a few foods to try but not sure if it's been tried. Like sugar free Jello brand Jello snack cups only 10 calories, and some fat free cool whip on top. Steamed califlower, broccoli, carrots. Weight watchers single serve veggies and sauces and smart ones dinners or breakfast items. So basically it would be like being on the weight watchers points system without paying them for the advice with no socializing abilities for help and questions answered. I'm 51 and obesity runs in my family so maybe I have the gene and also just some lazy metabolism. I have panic attack syndrom/ anxiety disorder and PTSD so stimulants such as coffee and diet pills are just out of the question. Any input or similar situations, any help at all or ideas are needed and wanted. |

When you were paying for Jenny Craig, what was that calorie intake that worked for you for a while but then did not? Certainly right now this website is all about the forum - the social and support angle - but when it started it was all about the calculators (exercise calculators, food calculators, and how many calories you require to lose weight calculators - we call those the RMR/BMR calculators and use them to figure out an individualised number that works for a particular person). So in that sense, many people on this forum are also doing a "DIY Weight Watchers without paying them". As far as "starving yourself" - if you know what foods to pick, you can eat certain foods in almost unlimited amounts and still guarantee weight loss. Knowledge is power! |

Losing weight is easy - just burn off more calories than you take in! Dieting is hard - funny how our personal lives intrude on our best intentions! The best way to lose weight is to eat healthy and take it slow. A 1 - 1.25 pound per week weight loss is a reasonable goal. This is a marathon, not a sprint. You have to be able to get yourself motivated and you have to stay motivated. I'm fighting a bad cold right now and my life-long habits would be to pig out to make myself feel better. My new mantra is that as long as I'm feeling lousy, I might as well diet. Tom Laurie author of The Losing Attitude for Dieters |
