2011 is over and we all have a fresh start. Will 2012 be the year you finally lose the weight for good? Do you have a plan you KNOW will work? Does your plan factor in how you will MAINTAIN after losing weight? Are you SURE your plan will work. Are you SURE your diet/exercise plan will reach the goals you want? Do you even know what your true goals are? Don't be another statistic this year. Don't add another excuse to the list as to why you couldn't get the job done in 2012. If you aren't 100% sure that your plan of action will result in your goals, why would you do it? If what you have done in the past didn't work, why do you think it will work this time? I've been a member of this site for a little while now and I come and go in spurts as I'm here to help. I see the same people still posting here from when I first joined, and I see countless new people as well as countless people not here anymore for whatever reason. I hate watching people come to these sites just lost and helpless, yet start a journey they don't understand and get frustated and quit cause its just easier to be fat. If you don't know where to go or where to begin and want 2012 to be YOUR year to change your life for ever, to start a new lifestyle, then I would LOVE to be a part of it and help you. I'm not someone that has always been in shape, I lost 60 pounds 2 years ago the HARD way so I know how to do it the right way and the EASIEST way. Don't make 2012 be just another year you gave up and lost hope, make it the year you made yourself happy and accomplished a goal you've been trying to achieve for many years. The tools are out there, the accountability is here, the hard work is up to you. Hope to see some PMs from you soon... |

I LOVE your enthusiasm :) I just wanted to say that I've been telling myself for the past 9 days "I'll start tomorrow", and of course I haven't. I like people who are motivating because in a way, I think it will help be feel more accountable. I don't want to be a failure anymore. It's hard to find someone who will stick with it and I feel lonely doing this by myself.... once I get going I won't stop because I know myself too well. I won't disappoint myself because once I start exercising, I won't stop, once I eat right, I won't revert back. If you keep posting and I have someone to look forward to seeing and keep me going I know I will actually start TOMORROW.... can you hold me to it?? |

If you have a good amount of fat to lose, focus solely on creating a deficit. Whether that's thru food or food and exercise, whatever works best for you and your schedule. If you don't create a deficit, you will not lose weight, its that simple. You don't need to go to the gym or walk outside or run or anything of that nature to lose weight. Eating "healthy" ironically isn't even necessary to lose weight, but its obviously the better option than just eating say 1 bacon cheeseburger a day and nothing else. It sounds too simple to be true, but that's the way it works. Believe me, I thought it was too simple to be true as well until I did it and lost 60 pounds doing it and am in the best shape of my life. |

That's pretty much counting calories, which may be necessary, but I'm trying to get away without doing that...For now. I don't want to count calories for the rest of my life. I don't like obsessing over food. I don't do well telling myself I can't have certain foods. I do better with positive encouragement (like children or pets, He heh). So I am going to make 2012 my year by encouraging myself to get in a lot more exercise than I've ever had in my life and try and eat more healthy foods that stablize my blood sugar. I do believe that sugary type foods or foods easily converted to sugar contribute to weight gain. I also have issues with my thyroid. It's probably Wilson's syndrome and dieting makes it worse. Not only does it slow down my metabolism, but gives me other unpleasant side effects as well such feeling cold, brain fog and depression. I'm not the average person of course, but I have to be careful about what dieting tactics I use or I just make myself more unfit. It's been frustrating. This year I'm focusing more on becoming fit and active and less on what the scale tells me because it upsets me and then I end up trying some sort of diet that makes me worse. My end goal is to be healthier. I use to have some vanity reasons, but they're pretty much gone at this point. I'm tired of feeling weak. 2012 is going to be the year that I get strong! ![]() Of course, I offer my support to everyone no matter what their strategy may be. We all are here to be healthier. |

you dont have to count calories per se, just need to be aware. If you want to stay "fit" or "healthy" its extremely difficult without being aware of what you're eating. Even if you're focusing on eating healthier foods, its still easy to eat too much of them and thus eat over maintenance and slowly put that weight back on. I don't count calories, but I do estimate what I'm eating and am aware. I dont withhold anything from my diet. In fact today I've eating quite a bit of candy, but I'm aware of it, aware of a reasonable calorie estimate to factor into what I eat for the remainder of the day. Now I'm not familiar with your condition as I'm not a doctor so I can't really say what will/will not happen for you, but if you must eat more for this, then you must exercise more/be more active in order to create that deficit. Again, you dont have to count calories or withhold any of your favorite foods from yourself, but you do need to be aware. I wish you luck on your journey! |

the only way i really know how to lose weight and to stay on track is to count calories. the last time i really did it and stuck to it i went from my highest of 160 down to 116. unfortuantly, the obsession of counting calories took it's toll. but really, it's all i know. i think this time around, i am not going to go so low both in weight and in daily calories (i consistently hit 1350, but i would have occasional up days too). i know it sounds ridiculous, but i would get really crabby if i was forced to go over my cals, or had to eat something that i couldn't count... i have to figure out a way to bring more balance while still being "strict" and creating a decent deficit to to drop roughly 1.5-2 lbs per week (or 3 sizes in 10.5 weeks), then i have to keep it off. plus, i want to be able to maintain while conitnuing to work on muscle strength and definition and eventually stop coutning cals unless i need to (i would like to give myself a bit of leeway so i'm not obsessing over 2 lbs like before). i do have to work out because it helps me move along faster, plus working out just feels good and does wonders for my attitude and body. plus it keeps me motivated. the good news is that i am on day 8 of working out. food is slowly but surely getting back on track and yes, i want 2012 to be the year that i get into good life long habits. i'm so freaking sick of yo-yoing. so, yes, i am positive, but also realistic... |

realistic is the key. This is a lifestyle change and if you can't keep up with the lifestyle, then its not the right plan for you. We each have to find a way to create the deficit that works for us that we can do for as long as we need. THEN the challenge of figuring out maintenance comes. keeping it simple and straightforward is the easiest and best way to go. Good luck to your as well Zen! |

You're probably right. Dang it. Thank you Zen for sharing your experience. Your achievements are amazing. Any tips for keeping track of calories? |

This IS my year to get healthy which includes losing weight. The key word is healthy, not skinny. So yes, I agree that for losing weight a calorie deficit is key, but how we create that deficit is what will make me healthy. Counting calories has always made me crazy when I have tried it. What I am doing is (as Grangers put it) being aware of what and how much I eat. I am not eliminating anything from my diet. If I want fried chicken, corn bread or a plate of greasy BBQ I will eat it. Just will have to limit portion sizes and know that for the rest of that day or the next to eat less and/or concentrate on more healthy foods as well as exercise to offset the effects of a unhealthy meal. |

i actually made it from 160 to about 140 without counting cals. granted, i wasn't very healthy about it, but it kinda hit the point where my body likes to stay, even though i don't like the 140. i would kinda fluctuate between 140-150, and then i really started to focus. i started counting my food. the easiest thing for me was to eat the same things every day. and if i knew that i was going to go over, i would compensate by "saving" my cals. if i went out to eat, i wouldn't eat all of my food , take the left overs home, but i could not bring myself to go another day of eating something without counting the calories of a meal. my best tip is stay focused but don't get obsessed. it's really easy to do over do it. i also tended to overestimate, so that helped. |

nice point zen. Overestimate = quicker fat loss. I overestimate always so something that's 300-350 cals is 500 or like 120 cal cheese stick is 200 cals, etc. Makes it a lot easier when I'm trying to cut weight. |

2012 is my last lap before maintenance. I've lost 50 pounds a year each for the past 2 years. I'm up a bit since the holidays and spending a weeks with my grandmother in the hospital, but it's coming off even faster than I expected. Late but new years resolution. No more troll-feeding. Honey Badger don't care, why should I ? If you don't get the joke look it up on YouTube, definitely puts a new spin on nature films Goals: Last 50 pounds by October 31 ( Weight loss is so hard for me in the winter that I concentrate all my efforts from March-November and "winter over" maintaining to avoid driving myself crazy over the same few pounds that will fall off in spring) Make it up the final hill of the Monster Cookie Metric Century without getting off the bike and embarrassing myself (I hate that hill!) Complete the Peach of a Century ride and the full length Cycle Challenge 2012, and get my "Road Animal" Badge. I'd like this to be the year I branch out from cycling and working out to something new like Tae Kwon Do , crossfit, and other things but that needs money to happen so I'll see how it goes. Most of my tax refund is already "mentally spent" on my bike! |

Hi all! This IS going to be MY year! I'm doing pretty well. I started my first week by cutting calories and I added in exercise last week. I am extremely sore, but I'm able to do more and more each workout! (with the help of Motrin) I lost 11 lbs since I started, my jeans are fitting me now and aren't tight which is awesome! I'm wearing a size 14 and my ultimate goal is to get into a 10, I'm very happy at that size. Right now, I'm going with a standard 1200 calories a day although 2 days ago I hit 1320, but I don't think that's a HUGE deal. According to the calorie calculator, I should be taking in 1294 a day, but that's with light activity. Now that I'm exercising I know I should take in more, but I'll adjust that as necessary. Good Luck to you all |

I'm going to have a hard time topping 2011. I Spent my birthday able to get on amusement park rides for the first time in years! Poor hubby- he had to trail me around like a hyperactive little kid. Two days later I'm all glammed up with my first pair of cute shoes- (my feet used to be too wide for them) kicking his tail at air hockey before a concert at a casino (low cut dress, bending over a table - o think I had an unfair advantage there, LOL) |

OK, there was so much chatter I had to sign off just so I could see what everyone is talking about. Honestly, I don't see the big deal, this guy is laughable. He is mean sprited and hateful but those are his problems, honesly when I read what he wrote I laughed it was so silly. |

True Hiker, but the problem is someone comes in argues with him before meeting all the other great people and leaves. The other problem I see with it, is that he's so over the top and nasty he actually generates sympathy for those in fat acceptance...kind of like a certain small group of sign carrying wackadoos are so offensive, they create more sympathy for the LGBT community. In a sense he's Fa's best recruiter by making them look necessary in the first place. (oh I KNOW I'm going to get it for that but it feels good to finally have it out of my system!) |
