i need to lose 20lbs. i've always been chubby and i'm done with it. i want people to see me and notice something more than my fat. my biggest problem is that my family eats at least 2 meals a day together and every time i say i'm going to skip a meal my family gets on me about it. i wouldn't mind starving myself i just need a way to hide it. i would try purging after eating, but i hear that bulimics tend to be chubbier. somebody anybody help me. i'm begging. |

The easiest time to stop an eating disorder is before you start it. Unfortunately at that time you don't realise how it will ruin your life. Now I will start by assuming you actually have some fat to lose, that you are not imagining it but are actually overweight or even a healthy weight but could still lose some weight and still be a healthy weight (is that a safe assumption?) Well in that case, you should lose the weight in a healthy way. If you're not sure what that means, you could start by reading our tutorial. If your family are eating unhealthy foods in quantities that are keeping you and them fat, perhaps suggest that they switch to healthier choices. If they don't want to, perhaps they will allow you to eat healthier foods that are different from what they're eating. Or perhaps you feel you already have an eating disorder? tell me more. |

For weight loss you never want to skip meals, here's why: When you skip a meal, automatically your body slows down it's metabolism as protection. It does not know when the next meal is going to be so everything is slowed down and you burn fewer calories. In order to protect itself, conserve energy and it's fat reserves, the next meal you eat, the body will store it as fat. |

This couldn't be farther from the truth for the normal everyday person, but yet this site and others continue to spread the myth of "starvation mode". For the normal person on this site, this is something that we will never even come close to facing. Skipping lunch tomorrow is not going to throw your body into crisis mode. |

an excellent study on the subject...search for an August 1994 study by Karl Freidl in the Journal of Applied Physiology in volume 77 no 2 933-940. Excellent study documenting "starvation mode". |

grangers710, I have been conducting a "personal experiment" which is certainly demonstrating a remarkable metabolic slowdown. Looking back at March/April/May of 2011, I was maintaining my weight at a calorie intake of approximately 2500 or possibly a little bit more. As an artefact of a desire to no longer count calories, I transitioned into a way of eating that emphasises healthy eating (with whole-grains losing their prominent placement: they still feature but in much more modest amounts). I am happy about the great simplifications in my eating, however let's now examine the implications for calorie intake. My best guess at my current intake is 1200-1800 calories. I genuinely no longer count calories so it is difficult to get any more precise. I typically eat 1.6 kilograms of produce (starchy vegetables, legumes, fruit and beans) as a "salad" to which I may add more fruit, some servings of popcorn, an assortment of dried fruit/seeds/nuts (which I have previously estimated at 200 calories). In the process of getting from point A to point B my calories were actually higher for a while so I gained some weight. My BMI increased from 20.2 to around 21.3 and is now back to 20.4. My weight has now been stable for around a month on this substantially-lower-intake-than-before. (Historically, through keeping tabs on my intake and keeping it relatively high, I was eating more calories whilst weighing less - bottoming out at BMI 18.5 eating more than I do today) So yes, I present myself as a non-extreme (not underweight) example of how a substantial reduction in food intake leads to a reduction in metabolism (caloric burn) leading to weight maintenance at a much reduced intake. Now, whether this is a "good thing" or a "bad thing" is a separate matter for debate (you could argue that I now need to spend less money on food, for example) but I'm writing here to dispute your suggestion that reduced intake does not lead to reduced metabolism. |

I'm not going to get a heated argument which I would love to fly over to the UK and do with you Nir, but just a few points.....you're little "experiment" in no way PROVES anything. You haven't counted calories you're estimating so your 1200-1800 could easily by 1800-3000. You in no way mention exercise. Are you doing more, are you doing less. A 3 month time frame is going to stunt your metabolism? Please. If this is the case, then why hasn't my metabolism been affected from my 9 months of significant calorie restriction? Why am I still losing weight/gaining weight at the same calorie intake that I was BEFORE I started cutting hard? I can just as easily throw out numbers and stats from my weight loss journey that takes me to the other end of the spectrum where I've had ZERO metabolic slowdown in my journey and I've been dieting HARD since January 2nd 2010 and by hard I mean periods of extended dieting at under 1000 cals a day WHILE working out for 2 hours a day. That's all I'm going to say on this matter.... |

You haven't counted calories you're estimating so your 1200-1800 could easily by 1800-3000. With all due respect, I have ~5 years of meticulous calorie counting behind me, and the biggest part of my intake (by volume/weight) is a 1.6kg 'salad' (let's call it 800 calories) with some bits and pieces on top. Clearly for October and November I was in a deficit (I was losing at least 0.5lb a week) and I continue to eat the same way. You in no way mention exercise. very good question, as a result of this drastic cut in calorie intake I have experienced some lethargy and indifference. Although on the face of it my schedule of 10 hours a week diminishing to 8 hours is not that significant, I have also changed a couple of hours over from a cardio workout to a lighter DANCE workout. I've noticed a somewhat extreme resistance to exercising any longer than 90 minutes and thus have re-scheduled my routine so I only have to do a 120 minute workout once a week. I have no doubt that this pull away from exercise (despite the gym being one of the main social focal points) somehow relates to having less energy - as a result of cutting calories. why hasn't my metabolism been affected from my 9 months of significant calorie restriction? I don't know - perhaps after those reduced-calorie periods you ramp it back up? Well do you? (and if not, how do you know that your metabolism hasn't slowed) |

Hey Suga, I know how it is dealing with not being comfortable around others eating or wanting to skip put on meals. Starving yourself isn't the way. When you do that your body starts to feed on itself creating more calories. Or something along those lines my Dr. told me. Find a eating routine NOT A DIET! a meal plan that works for you. Me and my husband?é?á started a paleo diet and haven't looked back really. I dont know the original place my husband got got the information but i did a quick search and got useful information introducing it at homepaloediet.com i really hope it helps. Overall love yourself for who you are. Bless, Mrs. Jones :) Last edited on 18 Jan 2012 07:39 pm by |

All I can suggest to you is start by watching what you eat ?óÔé¼ÔÇ£ reduce the size of your portions and you can bring the number of meals per day to 5 or 6. This will help you avoid overeating at meals. It also keeps your metabolism running as it is constantly burning food up. |

Hello, i feel that you would have to make sure you eat what you 'need' vs what you want. Your body will show/tell you want you are intaking. Youll actually feel full quicker and want less once you create good healthy eating habits. Nothing worth something is gained overnight. Hope it goes well. And please dont sacrifice eating. You may eat less to shrink your stomach, but not eating brings sickness and just as worse.. binge eating. Take it one day at a time. Before you know it you will have a habit! :) |

The sum of calories if not so important. The food have to be useful. No bread, no sugar, no potato. Eat more fresh fruits (not bananas and grapes) and vegetables, drink more water and move a lot. It is the better decision. Believe me. |

The best solution to your problem is by having a "GOAL" in weight loss. It will always start with a "PLAN". There are certain factors to consider: * What is your desired weight after the program? * What is the ideal weight with regards to your age, height and built? * What is your present weight? * How much weight will you lose every day? * What is your target date for your weight loss program? * What kind of exercises are appropriate for you? * You must know the exact foods for you. All of these few steps will help you start a new day of program. Last edited on 10 Oct 2012 05:22 am by bethshek444 |

It's not about the meals but HOW MUCH you eat at the meals. Have you ever heard of calorie balance or your max fat burning rate? If you're willing to measure, you can be certain to get in shape so that ppl look when you take your shirt off :) |

some weight loss tips: If you?óÔé¼Ôäóre trying to drop a few pounds, don?óÔé¼Ôäót start off by trying to overhaul all your eating and exercise habits. You?óÔé¼Ôäóre better off finding several simple things you can do on a daily basis ?óÔé¼ÔÇØ along with following the cardinal rules of eating more vegetables and less fat and getting more physical activity. Together, they should send the scale numbers in the right direction: down. 1. Once a week, indulge in a high-calorie-tasting, but low-calorie, treat. This should help keep you from feeling deprived and binging on higher-calorie foods. For instance: Lobster. Just 83 calories in 3 ounces. Shrimp. Just 60 calories in 12 large. Smoked salmon. Just 66 calories in two ounces. Sprinkle with capers for an even more elegant treat. Whipped cream. Just 8 calories in one tablespoon. Drop a dollop over a bowl of fresh fruit for dessert. |

Why don't you discuss it with your family. Also replace a large portion of your normal meals with fresh fruits and vegetables. Increase your water intake and do some brisk walking. Are you the only one in the family who has weight issues or are their others, I am sure if you talk to them they'll cooperate with you. |

How old are you? Stop being vain and if you are thinking of puking forget it. Calorie wise 20 pounds is a matter of 200 - 250 calories. Eat between meals but eat fruits and vegetables. Then you will eat less at meal time. |

Why you dont want to eat and starve? That will not work at all. Do exercise and eat limited dont skip your meal, that will have adverse effect on your body. Do as much as physical activity you can do. NO LINKS, THANKS Last edited on 14 Nov 2013 08:13 am by |
