Getting up at 5am 4 times a week to go to gym gives me a dilema.... what should I eat for breakfast?
Should I eat before I go or when I get back?
Should it me mostly carbs or mostly protien?
any advice?

Personally, I can not eat a big breakfast that early in the morning, but I would reccommend something light and healthy, with enough energy to give you a good boost, then after the workout, showering, etc. Have a more realistic meal.
I like Granola bars for energy boosting. But others will certainly have their own opinions.

I used to eat a boiled egg before leaving....and then toast with homus and a cup of tea when I got back.
I want to start eating rolled oats with honey and nuts.. but I think thats too heavy to eat before doing a big workout.
I want to make sure Im not doing my workout without enough fuel ... I want to give my body what it needs to work building the muscle and burning the fat.
Im still learning ;)

Ideally you should be having a portion of protien, a portion of carbs and a portion of vegetebles for breakfast.

I used to eat my dinner for breakfast about a year ago... but I think I would need to get up at 4am to do that.. and call me a slacker.. but 5am is early enough for me.. especially when I dont always get uninterrupted sleep as I have young children.
But I will look at that advice!
Thank You

Apple, this is a fairly controversial topic and here's my thought:
I recommend from personal and research experience to exercise first thing in the morning, as soon as possible after waking. This way you don't need to eat and you can slowly break the nightly fast with a 'break-fast' of mainly fruits to get your system started after your workout. Personally, I'm don't get hungry first thing in the morning and get stomach cramps if I eat before working out. I also follow the theory.. 'only eat when you've truly earned hunger'. This topic is somewhat controversial with some recommending to never exercise without eating and others swearing by starting early, clear, full of energy and light on their feet first thing in the morning.
Try it both ways and see what works best for you.
Just my thoughts...
All the best for your health!

I just never could eat when I just got up, but I could drink OJ. So that's what I did when I got up at 5 am and went to the gym before work. Then I'd come back home, shower and get dressed... then I could eat breakfast.
