The two drugs listed are what I have been prescribed for a hypo [previously hyer] thyroid condition (synthroid) and for anxiety and such (effexor). I have researched both drugs and see that synthroid might help boost my metablolism back to where it used to be, but I have seen horror stories about effexor.
Most people posting on effexor claimed it made them gain a significant amount of weight, yet some other websites say it acts as an appetite suppresant! Has anyone had experience with these two drugs and how it affected their weight? I am too nervous to start taking the effexor simply because of the weight gain horror stories. Quit smoking 2 months ago after 5 years chain smoking and gained about 10-15 lbs, I'm up to 185 and I'm scared.

I don't know about Synthroid, but I've taken Effexor.
In my experience, when I first started taking it, the Effexor made me a little sleepy and it killed my appetite (which was weird because I'm always ready to eat) but only for one or two weeks. After that I had my usual eating desires. I didn't gain a significant amount of weight - maybe 5 lb.
However, it did ruin my libido until I took myself off of it. It was very frusterating. Also, I don't know if it helped my anxiety a whole lot. I wouldn't use it again, personally.
What does your doc have to say about xanax? That worked quite well for me.
Best,
Tachi

I'm not trying to depress you, but Effexor caused me to gain 50 pounds in about four months. I have always been thin (I actually modelled for a little while) and was at that weight just before I started Effexor. To my knowledge I didn't change my eating habits at all (I always just ate when I was hungry), but gained a massive amount of weight in a very short time. I stopped taking the drug, but have been battling these pounds since.
Drastic weight gain also occured for my ex-girlfriend and my mother when they were prescribed Effexor. (My mother is still on it, the girlfriend and I are not.)
I really want to say that if you need it for your mental health, then it may be worth it. (My mother decided that it was.) There are other options (like Welbutrin which often causes weight loss) depending on your needs.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do!
(P.S. Who could possibly say that it's an appeitite suppressant? Some people have different effects, but in every study I've ever seen, in general, most people gain weight on Effexor.)

Eyesee, you just described exactly what happened to me on a drug called Lexapro. I had always been thin up through high school, I never worried about what I ate or how I looked in my clothes. That is, until I went through the usual teen angst stage and was told I should be on an antidepressant. Within about 3 months I gained what was probably 20 pounds, at least, even though I did not change my eating habits (well, perhaps I ate a little more as this drug seemd to give me constant food cravings). The funny thing was, it didn't even make me happy, it actually did the exac opposite as now I had these new found body image issues.
I'm by no means an expert, but in my honest opinion, drugs like those (Lexapro, Effexor, anything of that sort) are overprescribed and often unnecessary. There are so many other ways to improve mental health. Want to know what I have found to be the absolute best antidepressant out there? Running.
Just felt compelled to say this. Again, though, it must be your decision.
