Does anybody know the difference between Ephedra and Ephedrine? And is there any evidence that these work/dont work?

I heard recently that a stack (a combo of suppliments that, well, suppliment eachother) of Ephedrine, Asprin and Caffien will DRASTICALLY increase weightloss, but youve got to monitor your heart rate. Is there any truth to this?

Thanks!

Will

I am actually surprised at how people willingly want to kill themselves with such advice.  if you are finding ways to kill yourself drastically, then please go ahesd with the suggestd drugs.

Ephedra / ephedrine is the same thing. It will increase your blood pressure, drastically.

Aspirin has nothing to with metabolism, it is a blood thinner.

Caffeine, will make you more alert, perhaps raise your metabolism level a bit more, because it gets you excited.

all these 3 drugs could, and would result in, High blood pressure, blood thinning, pani or anxiety attacks, rarely hormonal problems, mental problems, cardiological problems and a horde more actually.

If you want to be healthy, and want to live a long live, stop following such cheap and short term , dangerous gimmicks, just diet and exercise.

According to Vanderbilt Universities own David Schlundt, PhD.,

"...Despite its many potentially harmful side effects, ephedrine is for the most part, dangerous only if abused. Nevertheless, it offers a variety of positive qualities in terms of its beneficial effects on particular aspects of the mind and body. One of its more significant qualities is its potential effect on weight loss. Ephedrine has the unique ability to stimulate thermogenesis in the human body. It works by, essentially, speeding up the heart rate, thus inducing a faster metabolism. "To lose body fat, you must burn more energy than you eat so that your body has to draw upon the fuel stored in fat cells. The only way to lose weight is to increase the amount of fuel you burn, decrease the amount you consume, or do both at the same time. The rate at which you can lose weight is limited by how fast the body burns energy."... "

These 'bad' side effects you speak of are the same on medicines across the board.

"...The real problem with ephedrine is directly related to its powerful side effects and the fact that products containing ephedrine are easily obtained and sold with "little federal oversight." A published report dated October 12, 1995 reveals that the FDA is just beginning to make an attempt at "stringently" regulating the drug. "Prompted by growing concern that these (dietary supplement) products contain enough ephedrine to cause serious and sometimes fatal heart and nervous system side effects,...the advisory committee on Wednesday began reviewing research into about 100 ephedrine-containing supplements, to help the FDA decide how far to go in regulating them. A key question is whether certain people could be warned that they are at particular risk or if the substance is too dangerous to stay on the market." The same report stated that "more than 330 Americans have suffered side effects from ephedrine-containing products, including 12 deaths." A more recent article dated August 28, 1996, states that more than 800 have suffered serious side effects and 17 have died because of ephedrine related complications. ..."

Im not trying to sell this stuff, im just issuing a statement. Ive struggled with my weight for years, and its finally coming off and the ONLY thing ive changed is that ive started taking this suppliment.  Its working. Since I started taking it, im down 20 lbs. (2 months) and on track to a healthier lifestyle. The proof is in the pudding, and no matter what you do - the only way to get healthy is through diet and exercise. Period. Thats not to say there arent suppliments to help you along, because they are- and Ephedra is one of them.

Ephedra contains a chemical called epinephrine, which is very powerful.  When you take it, it causes the body to release fight or flight chemicals.  It's used medically for extreme crises, not as a casual drug.

The Ephedra with is that you can take it for days, weeks, months, and even years with no reaction.  In fact one individual might never have a reaction.  However, if there is the right combination of events, you could easily die.

This is especially true if you are either a) a heart patient or b) someone with asthma.  As a master herbalist, I can tell you this.  This herb belongs on the restricted list, and should *not* be available for someone to use without some monitoring.  It is *very* dangerous.

I don't know where you live, but Ephedra is now illegal everywhere in the United States, as well as in many other countries.  I used to use it before it was outlawed, but I knew the whole time that it was only a matter of time before the FDA decided it was not safe.  This "stack" you speak of is very, very unsafe.  I would recommend trying to find a healthier way to lose weight.

In all fairness, ephedrine really isn't all that dangerous unless you suffer from high blood pressure or heart problems, or you overdose, in which case a heart attack or stroke could potentially occur. The problem is, it used to be marketed as a weight loss aid, and those who take weight loss aids are typically overweight. And overweight people often do suffer from the problems mentioned above. It is still used to treat asthma and sold over the counter (well, behind the counter, anyway) and if you read the back of the box, it does not say anything about strokes/heart attacks, and the dosage is the same as it would be if used for weight loss.

I, along with many others, have taken ephedrine (with caffeine & aspirin). I did not lose any weight, but that is most likely due to the fact that I don't actually have wieght to lose, I used it more as an energy booster (it certainly is a good late-night study aid). I didn't have any horrible side effects, pretty much just jitters and irritability (as is the case with any stimulant). I suppose I was a little more likely to snap at people. Oh, and it made me very thirsty all the time, so running was a little difficult as I had to keep stopping for water.

So, I'm not really for or against it, I just thought I'd throw this out there. Yes, people have died after using ephedrine, but the same can be said for many drugs, I'm sure.

SnazzyFlyer,

A month or so ago I heard just what you are saying from a guy at the gym that uses it. He's in GREAT shape and not overweight. He buys it as you say and mixes it with caffeine and aspirin as you say.

I thought it would be interesting to post here myself but I didn't want to encourage anyone to do the same. I'm really glad that you point out the side effects, and that at least for certain people it can be dangerous. Check with your doctor.

My Tutorial explains what I believe to be the only long term answer to weight loss... learning to eat well and exercise.

Thanks,

Thanks to everyone for putting this information out there. I'm debating trying Ephedra for weight loss. The last time I used it was before it became illegal when I was in high school and had to go to school after staying up all night. It always made me really jittery and unhappy, but I'm not sure how it will effect me if I actually sleep. I think I might (carefully) try it with my diet/exercise combination.

Thanks again! :-)
