Hello everyone,

let me start off with the basics:
I am a male
5'10
212 lbs
I am built with a small frame

3 years ago, I lost weight from 190 to 145 and kept it off for a year and a half....I went about loosing the weight in an unhealthy manner: starving and jogging until it became too much. How can I loose weight now and keep it off? I feel unhealthy, and out of control. I am addicted to sugar foods and drinks as well as fast food. Fast food seems to be my addiction: I have even drove 45 mins out of my way just to get a burger and fries.

I am a college student, and time is limited between work and classes. I HAVE to do something though; I am out of control!

Oh and my excuse for allowing myself to go on these 45 min. trips for a burger and fries binge is b/c I just got out of a relationship. The ex was much bigger than me and we always ate unhealthy, and my weight got out of control mainly then due to deep fried mozzarella sticks and homemade burgers. There is no excuse, I know.

Please help by offering advice!

Hey man, I too went from the 200s to the 140s.  It wasnt until I truly gained an understanding as to how the body works that I was able to really keep it off for good and live in a maintenance state.  Once we get in a weight loss grove and are eating in a deficit it becomes easy, but once we are "allowed" to eat more and eat the things we like, it becomes significantly more challenging and thus so many people just put the weight back on.  You have to find what works for you, not what worked for me, or what worked for 100 other people here, you have to find an approach that is sustainable for you.  Nothing wrong with a burger and fries every now and then, or even drinking soda as long as you still create that deficit.  How fast did you take the weight off and how quick did you put it back on?  Did you do any calorie counting before?

It took me about 5 months to get the weight off. I really had no understanding of how to diet, so I just limited myself to one meal per day. I would eat an average meal in a very small proportion, and then force myself to run/jog for hours. This became very unhealthy. I kept the weight off for about a year and a half then in roughly the same time (a year and a half or less) I put it back on again.

I think this time I need to take things slower and do it in a healthier manner.

Here is why this guy is full of #%@&!.

He remained ignorant of "how the body works" and he got and stayed fat. Ignorance is a choice and he chose to remain ignorant. He probably wanted to get laid so out of deperation he put 2 and 2 together and he figured out a mystery that fat people have been unable to solve. I figured out that if you eat less and move more you lose weight. Give him a Noble prize!

Actually drinking soda and eating burgers is very unhealthy.

There is a formula for safe calorie reduction. It is no mystery. It's merely a matter of doing it. Changing attitudes and behaviors is crucial. Most fatlings know that they need to eat less and move more. They simply don't do it. Why? It's because they are greedy gluttons who love food.

Now that the trolls have left I will explain your problem.

You made this a war against fat when the real enemy was your behavior. You took the George Bush approach and attacked the wrong enemy.

The enemy is your ego. You lost weight for vanity and not sanity. Your motivation was wrong and you never educated your palate. Your plan failed and and it failed because crash diets usually fail. You knew that but your need for instant gratification won out. That's fattitude.

Your battle is not with the fat it is with your inner glutton and before you can eject your inner glutton you must first acknowledge that it is there. They way you do that is by gathering any humility that you may have, putting your ego in check and admitting that YOU are a GLUTTON.

If you don't think that you are a glutton then prove that you are not a glutton.

Definition of GLUTTON1 a : one given habitually to greedy and voracious eating and drinking

You didn't pack on the pounds by eating a little but too much you went :pig: hog :pig: wild.

Weight gain requires a lot of pigging out. Since there are 3500 calories in a pound of fat you went double :pig::pig: hog wild. You are indeed out of control.

Start by admitting that you are a glutton.

You have an interesting approach to all of this. I've never thought of it that way. All true though! Thanks man!

I have had pretty good success helping people with my methods. The truth is, the diet industry's snake oil has been huge failure. Nutrition is part of it but so is attitudes and behavior.

You seem like a smart guy so here is what you need to do. Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate and eat at that level. Eat only nutrient dense low calorie food and get .5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Do that and you will never be fat again.

Reeducate your palate and do this for health. Good looks are merely a byproduct.

What Do I do if I am in a spot where healthy food isn't an option? Should I eat a lower amount of calories of #%@&! food? Occasionally I will find myself stuck for an entire weekend trapped in a house with only hamburger, bread and lots and lots of chips.
