I read something last night that really struck a chord with me...and a bad one at that.
I visit another website unrelated to weight loss and there's a group there for curvy women. I joined because even when I'm at a healthy weight, I have an hourglass figure. I used to feel extremely uneasy with it which could probably be attributed to my being a tomboy. Note: I don't consider what I am now to be curvy, I consider it unhealthy. I joined because I thought seeing women confident with the same shape would draw me out of my shell a little and give me motivation. A lot of the people who join aren't what I would call curvy, however...they're obese and, at times, even morbidly obese. I haven't said anything about this, though, I've remained quiet.
But last night, I checked the group out and saw a posting about vintage weight-gain ads. I thought, "Wow, I gotta see this..." So I clicked the link and this is what came up ---> http://www.retronaut.co/2011/11/vintage-weight-gain-ads/
All of these people started posting positive things like yeah, that's it! What's beautiful changes, skinny is in style now but eventually curves will come back into fashion! What happened to those days?! Etc. But not a single one of the women in those ads are what you would call overweight and certainly not obese. I, personally, think some of them have great looking figures (see the one in the red bathing suit for instance).
I probably shouldn't be but listening to these women delude themselves kind of irritated me. The OP stated that the ads are proof that society is fickle and that "curvy" women shouldn't feel bad. Some men even posted to agree. Another woman responded by saying that she was sad that society no longer celebrates "lusciousness" - said woman is easily obese. I think only one person might have tried to inject some reality into the thread by saying that our diets have changed since then so obesity is a bigger problem these days. She seems to be the only woman in the thread who is anywhere near a healthy weight range for her height.
I thought about posting, resisted at first, and then eventually stated, "But none of these models are overweight or obese, they're healthy. They're not BBW." No one has responded yet and I half expect to get chewed out or have my post outright deleted but geez...how deluded can a person be? If you spill over onto a second seat on an airplane, take up most of a king sized bed by yourself, and are consuming thousands of calories a day, you aren't curvy, you're killing yourself. >_<
I suppose they have given me motivation, though. Dear God, don't let me get that unhealthy and think I'm still hot. @.@

| Times change. Thing is, there used to not be obese people until our diets started focusing heavily on grains.

Times do change but I don't think they're making accurate comparisons. If they're looking at those women, who are perfectly healthy, and seeing themselves - even though they are morbidly obese - they're terribly, terribly deluded. =/

I think the biggest thing that has changed is how extreme everything is now. Some of us obsess over every calorie we eat, we read magazines with celebrities talking about how they have to work out x amount of hours a day, don't eat carbs, and so on, and then on the other end of things we have people eating fast food every day and sugar by the bucket load, whilst doing no exercise. Of course there are in-betweens, but I think generally we've lost sight of 'moderation'. Women back them wanted to be slim. That was it. It was that simple - they wanted to have 'nice figures'. But I think everything was much simpler back then. People got married, had families, stayed together...it was a different life. I don't know when it all changed - I'm only 25 - but to celebrate being obese - well, that never would have happened in 1948.
I miss those days. :( If I could marry George Bailey and live in Bedford Falls, I totally would.

One way or another, there is a misunderstanding here. Either these obese women are wrong to have picked the "group for curvy women" as their natural home, or you have been (understandably) confused by the slang of obese people self-describing themselves as "curvy".
You may have stumbled upon what JSABD refers to as the Fat Acceptance movement - the proud-to-be-large.

"We're a great group of people from all walks of life, all body types, and all interests."
I get the all body types part but I'm more of a realist and I prefer to call a spade a spade. It's all about basically loving your body but the word "curvy" has been applied to women like me - who are half of most of these women's size - as well as women who are morbidly obese and women who are in shape. Most of the women just happen to be obese and above. It's like they truly believe they are "curvy" and came here for support regarding their lifestyle choice. So maybe it is heading more towards "fat acceptance" but I don't think they're actually going that route on purpose - they truly believe they have curves and are "real women". Only a few have fallen on the fat acceptance side, without a doubt, but a lot really just think they're curvy. I personally believe they picked the wrong group because I think there is also a BBW one and it just kind of became their "home" I suppose.
After I posted my response, no one answered. /thread I suppose.

Not true. Look at the Asian countries. Their staple is rice.
Obesity is caused by fattitude and fat.
