| Find something that works for you and stick to it. Get the right mindset and attitude. Also, get rid of food that's not approved for your diet and out of the house, otherwise you'll eat it. Last edited on 16 Dec 2011 05:02 pm by mikestenger

Calculate your BMR and eat at that level. Eat healthy food.

Diet AND exercise. Both are needed to lose weight. Be consistent and make realistic long-term goals. Join enjoyable exercise classes and find low-calorie foods that you really like.

It's simple. Eat less. Exercise more.

Probably the best way to lose weight and keep it off, but I don't know about it being easier!

I would suggest reading the tutorial on this website. A little knowledge about what you're up against never hurts.

Everyone has their own story here, but the advice will be similar -- weight loss is 95% what you eat and 5% how much you exercise.
I lost 37 kilos (81 lbs) after I had let myself go for a while. I lost it all by changing what I ate, I didn't do any exercise, so I lost muscle mass in the process but it wasn't a big deal. Now that my weight has been stable for 2 years (I've never regained), I started exercising again and I'm pretty muscular again.
The key for me was to avoid situations where I had to exercise self-discipline (as you probably experience daily, self-discipline is a currency that you deplete, and runs out quickly). That meant, finding healthy food that I really enjoy eating, by reeducating my palate (it's quick - a week or so after you stop binging on sugar, you start tasting things properly again) and spending a bit more to get quality products, like fresh fruit and produce; frozen stuff is just all watery and unsatisfying to eat. I saw it as a permanent lifestyle change, rather than "a diet" with a beginning and end.
As for exercising, same thing, the part where self discipline would be involved, would be to actually go to the gym and drop what I'm doing. Instead I progressively got some equipment at home and I never skip; but I do it when I have time during the day.
In terms of regimen change, I almost completely cut dairy out (I still eat some yoghurt, but almost no milk anymore, and no cheese); just this alone made me feel heaps better right away. Maybe you will react differently, but for me it felt like I had stopped ingesting poison.
Also I don't know if it's related, but I haven't been sick once in two years, I mean, not even the flu. It started exactly when I changed regimens.
BTW I lost those 37 kilos in about 8 months (a bit rapid, but I ate above my BMR - I guess I was REALLY over-eating before) and it took me about 2 months of exercising 5 days/week (with two days of rest just so that muscles can rest and build, but I really miss exercising those days, as others said it's like a -good- drug) to get into a pretty good shape.
Also while JSABD is extreme in his attitude and ways, and provokes people, his core message is true, and a lesson to learn in all areas of life: you are the sole person in charge of your actions, body and decisions. It is both frightening and liberating when you figure it out (because, the good news is, you don't depend on anyone else to fix your weight or most things that you think are wrong in your life!)
I'll be happy to assist in any way, but if you want to go back to a healthier weight, and you set your life up so that you don't have to keep making decisions about it, but the default state is that you're doing healthy things, then you can do it.
If you want a hopefully inspirational pic: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/187304/weightloss2.jpg . I'm still missing to take a picture of the current stage, with muscles shaping up, but there you go. I know, it looks like special effects from those Eddy Murphy movies, but yes, it was THAT bad :-)

Everyone needs a nutritional plan and if that plan cuts you calories gradually and if you stick with that plan there is no way that you won't lose weight.
Again, calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate and eat at that level.
Rapid weight loss is rarely a good thing.
