Over the last few months, a weird behavior keeps showing up. It's embarrassing, and really irritating.

In a weak moment I decide to go off the rails and binge. It happens when I'm stressed out. As far as I can tell, I'm not even hungry.

So I head to the vending machine or the convenience store, picking up stuff, planning it out -or at least planning damage control - like one single serve ice cream instead of a pint, or the smallest bag of chex mix I can find. ( chex and gardettos used to be my thing) Before I actually buy the stuff, my brain kicks in and says "forget this, I'm not letting a freakin' cookie push me around and put me where my uncle was!" So I put everything back feeling like a moron and buy a diet soda.

I have no idea why I do this , and I want to stop it before I even stop the bike and go into the store. What on earth is going on with me? It's not hunger, and I know at least mentally the junk won't taste or feel good.

I don't like answering with theories but that's all I have for this.

1. These are habits and behaviors that have been with you a long time. Junk food feels good so you are drawn to it.

2. Association. The convenience store is a trigger. Avoid it.

3. (Not a so much a theory) Fattitude is a neuro-biological and Neuro behavioral process. Your brain is still unlearning.

It's like cigarette smoking. They like that cup of coffee, the tapping of the cigarette, the smell, and all the rituals.

Some heroine addict will inject water because the like the "spike".

You may like the sound and feel of the wrapper and then the smell. You may like the smells in a convenient store.

On  very primitive level food make us feel safe. Like other fatling you have said things like. I'm starving or I love Cheeries Garcia. Your unconscious mind takes those words literally.

Try working on yourself talk and speak accurately. Avoid food commercials and the food network. If you were a sex addict you would not want to be watching porno. The Food Network is porno for gluttons. It truly is.

I don't use the terms "love" or "starving" in connection with food since you brought it to my attention. That was a very good point, so I appreciate you doing it. Still saying I love my bike though! "She's" a better friend than most people I know, and is always there when I've had a bad day.

The smell, you got me...especially if it involves almond extract or cinnamon. Fortunately that junk never tastes as good as it smells. No problem,I must have 6 different varieties of chai in the tea drawer.

Different way home, there's an idea. I actually feel pretty stupid that I didn't think of it. I must have used the same route home for the past 10 years. Thanks

Everyone salivates more when they smell something tasty. Pavlov's dogs would drool when they heard a bell ring. Visual cues can do the same thing. If they were to look at your brain on a PET scan after looking at pictures of food and then pictures of something unappealling like vomit or dog poop your brain would look different. Take some pictures of a food for which you have a weakness. Stare at it while smelling a foul odor.

Create new patterns in your brain.

Keep it logical, rational and scientific.

The new patterns are already pretty much there.
I look at anything with sugar, I get the mental image of my uncle's foot. I can't think of anything I have a weakness for. The only times I've slipped on my diet in the past year were unintentional, oh-carp-that's-not-diet moments.

I'm starting to realize it's just boredom and loneliness. After the workout, it's past midnight, hubby's fast asleep. If I lived near a casino, and my brain reacted to it I might gamble. If I had money I'd shop online or be a QVC addict.

You probably have some free floating anxiety. Get a good hormone evaluation from a specialist. Women are far more anxious than men.

Wow, something that I agree with you on - that women are far more anxious then men.  Maybe that's because we have far more to deal with then men?

It depends on the people involved. Men have just as much stuff to deal with. They generally deal with it more effectively. Testosterone is the rational hormone. Testosterone increases intelligence plus the male and female brain are different. Men are better at abstract reasoning and deductive reasoning whereas women have better verbal skills. On average men are smarter and that is why they see the forest for the trees sooner than a woman will.

Men will avoid the tough love forum like the plague because they know right away that they are gluttons. They admit it but then avoid dealing with it. Women actually believe their own BS.

Anxiety? Got that right, the buyout of the company is not looking good, and our international parent company may just shut us down. If it wasn't for the workouts I'd be falling apart. Conservatively about 60% of my coworkers are on some kind of stress or anxiety related drug, so it's not just me.

Anxiety can be organic in nature or it can be psychologically based or a combination of the two.

Eliminate stress and maybe switch to yoga for a while.

Anxiety is characterized by impatience, poor concentration, a feeling of helplessness, irritability, being tense and restless. Though this is a normal state of being for many, if the condition becomes frequent, it can prove to be a silent killer by acting as a host for many other ailments. Some of the symptoms of anxiety are chest tightness, indigestion, dry mouth, fatigue, sweating and headache.   There are several natural supplements on the market that are being studied for their potential to treat anxiety. The top 10 supplements for anxiety are:   1. Vitamin B. Good old vitamin supplements like Vitamin B are among the best anxiety busters. Many of the B vitamins including B6 (Pyridoxine), B1 (Thiamine), and B3 (Niacinamide) are excellent vitamin supplements for anxiety. Known for their positive effects on the nervous system, vitamin supplements for anxiety stabilize the body?óÔé¼Ôäós lactate levels which are responsible for various anxiety attacks.   2. Vitamin C. Another effective vitamin supplement for anxiety is vitamin C. It plays a pivotal role in the proper functioning of brain chemistry and adrenal glands. With large doses of this vitamin supplement, a tranquilizing effect is brought about that decreases anxiety.   3. Vitamin E. Vitamin E is a vital vitamin supplement for anxiety as it helps in transport of oxygen to the brain.   4. Trace minerals. Some of the best supplements for anxiety happen to be trace elements such as zinc, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and selenium. An abundance of magnesium and calcium prevent nervous tension. Calcium happens to be a natural tranquilizer while magnesium?óÔé¼Ôäós role is renowned in the relief of muscle spasms and nervousness. Zinc on the other hand is a diet supplement for anxiety that generally calms the nervous system. Potassium, much like Vitamin C, is effective in the proper functioning of adrenal glands while selenium is a powerful antioxidant that has proved to have anti-anxiety results.   5. GABA. GABA is an amino acid that acts as one of the best supplements for anxiety. It is found in some fish like mackerel, GABA tea, nuts (especially almonds), other seafoods, bananas and wheat bran.   6. Valerian. It is one of the best supplements for anxiety. Extracted from the roots of the herb, Valerian is an excellent diet supplement for anxiety because it increases the availability of GABA in the brain. Valerian also helps with insomnia and is known to have very few side effects.   7. Kava. Kava is a natural supplement for anxiety extracted from the herb Piper Methysticum. It has been used as a supplement for anxiety treatment after being approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, kava may have adverse effects on the liver.   8. Passionflower or Passiflora incarnate is perhaps one of the oldest natural anxiety treatments and supplements. It?óÔé¼Ôäós an ancient folk remedy. Passionflower has mild adverse effects that include nausea, rapid heartbeat and drowsiness.
  9. Essential oils. Essential oils of some plants are used as anxiety busters. Oils of rose, nerolis, sandalwood, ylang-ylang, bergamot, geranium, jasmine and lavender are good for this. Lavender is the best and most common.

Earl Grey tea has bergamont
  10. Green tea. L-theanine, an amino acid found in green tea, is among the best anti-anxiety supplements.

To eliminate stress, I'd have to see this thing out.Whatever happens, it can't be much longer, though I've switched to part time until I finish studying. Once that's done, I can turn my Warcraft account back on - that game is such an escape!

About the workouts? You created a monster. I miss it on the weekends - it actually gives me a reason to look forward to going to work!

Just wanted to put an end to this part of the story.
Sometimes it really is the situation causing the anxiety and nothing else.

Now that I'm out of the stress-pit, It hasn't happened since. I ride home like a banshee because it's fun , or I look for fun things to do at night, and food is not one of them. The place I work now has a tremendous difference in the obesity rate. I rarely see someone over 300 now when there were several over 500 at my previous job. It could definitely be the lack of a greasy spoon work canteen, but the temptation to overeat has completely evaporated for me,and I doubt I'm alone in this.

Hey Tank girl! It sounds to me like you have problems with impulse control so definitely stay away from the casino. Everything that you are saying sounds like the activities of someone with an eating disorder. Those with eating disorders binge because of the lack of self control, then feel guilty and do extreme things to make up for it like vomiting, excessive working out, cleanses, fasts, and laxative use. You should definitely seek therapy before things reach a breaking point, and with the stressors of life, it is bound to hit you before you know it. Good luck hun!
