I have been eating about 400 calories a day for over a month (?).
I have been losing weight and right now I'm 123 pounds and my weight won't go any lower. I'm on the slim/average size. I probably look around 115 but when I see my skinny friends I feel the need to lose weight. My goal is to be around 100lbs (I'm 20 years old and my height is 5"4).

I know that it's not healthy to just eat 400 calories, but my body has gotten used to it somewhat. I know in the long term, it's extremely bad but I don't seem to really care.. All I think about is calories calories calories & weight.

It's frustrating to see my friends eating so much and not gaining weight. I always feel fat when I hang out with them. I know I shouldn't care, but I can't really stop myself. I literally count every single thing I eat. And when friends tells me to eat with them I always decline because I'm scared of the calories I may eat. I feel like it's sort of like a disorder but I'm pretty sure it's not right?

Usually this is what I eat everyday:
Breakfast: 1/5 brown rice & 1/5 korean stew & energy drink
Lunch: nothing. But if I'm super hunger I eat half of a sandwhich (~120 calories).
Dinner: 1/5 brown rice & 1/5 korean stew.
I usually sleep for 4 hrs and the rest of the time I study or at school.

I guess my question is: why am I not losing weight anymore? (I've been checking my weight every single day. sometimes I lose and sometimes it stays the same. It's been like this for... 3 days?).
And I just wanted to know if anyone thinks something is wrong with me, or if this is some young adult thing that every women goes through.

P.S. I won't ever (in the future) eat more than 400 calories, because I'm scared I'll double my weight.

Thank you for reading and please give your input.

If (like your friends) you had not been under-eating and therefore had a properly functioning body, then you, (female, 20, 5'4", 123lb) would need 1,576 calories every day to stay THE SAME.

Unfortunately, eating 400 calories a day (when you are of normal weight) has its downsides - and the longer you keep at it the longer it will be for you.

The logical approach would be to reverse from this 'dead end', gradually go back to normal eating, and then - when your body is back to normal - lose whatever weight you want to lose with a relatively small deficit.

I would look into why you are having such body issues. You are not fat and it sounds like you don't need to be at 100lbs I would look into some hypnosis or something to help you feel better about yourself no matter what. Start eating the normal amount of calories and just work out to stay toned and in shape.

@ prettylady

I consider myself fat because my other friends are stick skinny.
I actually lost weight though. I'm 117lbs at the moment. I've been eating a bit more lately because I can't help it.. But I still eat less than I should..

I'm planning on working out once spring break starts. ^^

@ Nir

maybe I should have done that.. but at the moment I'm 117lbs. i've been losing weight little by little. I'm really glad I didn't gain any weight.
In Korea, the 'normal' body weight for girls my height is around 48-50k.
Weight is very important there, so I have the same mindset..

I realized that maybe 100lbs is too little. so my goal now is 105ish.

Thank you for your advices!!

The reason why you have stop losing weight is because you have hit  plateau . I know this because I use to be on a very low calorie diet between 500 to 800 calories a day .

The good part is you drop the pounds fast ..

The bad part is you can't live on such a low calorie

Your body will shut down and you will become very ill and could die .

Ask yourself  are you really willing to put your health at risk just to be like your friends ?

Do you think your friends will care when your sick at home while there off having fun ?

You will learn real fast who is a real friends and who is isn't  .

When I was at 110 lbs.  I was happy that I had made it to my goal weight , but I was miserable at staying at that weight .

I could not enjoy life because food was always on my mind and the thought of eating scared me .

You can be at your goal weight but do it in a healthy way

Hi - I am glad you posted this!

Some background on me I am 5 feet even, small boned and will turn 50 on Sunday. I have had two lapbands in my life, both removed because they slipped. During the last lapband removal of the lapband due to food poisoning, I spent 12 days in the hospital ... nothing by mouth and gained weight - yup left with 5 extra pounds on IV fluid. I have tried dieting and working out for most of my life. I have tried every diet fad known. I have a slow thyroid and take medication for it. I literally must starve to lose weight.

On Dec 30 2011 I weighed 187. My standard diet was 700 calories a day - mostly soup and salad. I started on 400 calories a day, a 2 mile walk, weight lifting and 150 stomach crunches a day. I have lost 20 lbs since Jan 1. I am fighting on until I reach my goal weight of 130 lbs. Since I have had a lapband, I know how to also supplement with vitamins and ensure I maximize the calories I do eat. I also continue to take my hypothyroid medicine daily.

Typically, I eat a hard boiled egg for breakfast, 1 oz of salmon for lunch. That's pure protein. I eat 1oz of boneless skinless baked chicken breast for dinner with a tablespoon of veggies and cottage cheese. My treat is a 15 calorie sugar-free popsicle for desert. At work lunches, I only eat the meat offered, but never exceed two teaspoons of food.

My plan is: When I get to 150, I will allow up to 500 calories a day diet, and 140 up it to a 600 calories a day diet, but increase the amount of time walking and working out. I anticipate it will take me until June to reach the 130 mark. At that time, I may increase my intake of calories to 800 calories.

I think many of many of the comments here are valid. One must take into account: body style, family history, and existing medical conditions. Some people are small-boned. My daughter who is 21 weighs 90 lbs and is 4 foot 11 - she is pure muscle. She lives in Germany and she eats only a saucer of food at each meal. She plays handball and soccer, runs and is very active.

Oh to be 21 again! Have fun with it dieters!

I used to be and I still am in the same boat my friend
Try to eat normal but healthy...
Your body is used to the 400calories plan as the others already said.

DON'T be afraid to eat more. Anxiety is a reason for getting fatter so eat without feeling guilty and you'll be fine! (anxiety=over doing it with food)
Just relax and trust me you won't get any fatter by just eating 1500+ calories... ;)

Holy cow, stop the madness! When I was young,I did an under 1,000 calorie diet and lost weight, but then my parents freaked and I ate normally and gained 40 lbs.
It took 3 years for my metabolizm to normalize. Then all of a sudden I lost weight and got slim again just normally.

I would never diet again after that. Everyone has a "happy weight" that you can keep without trying super hard. I am 5'7" and between 135 and 140. People call me skinny all the time and think I weigh 120lbs. It depends on how you carry it.

Stop weighing yourself, I never step on a scale, ever.

I know how much anxiety the thought of eating more can kill u inside ! Been there.
It's true you've plateaued. Listen, increase you're intake a little bit (100-200) with vegetables. You're body and mind will be satisfied.

That's easy breezy. What you really need o do is SLEEP MORE. I'm not kindding. You're body is shutting down partly because you're not eating enough and because you're not restoring. Simple science behind this : our body keeps running on cals and rest. No food = death. No sleep = death.

4 hours is not enough. So before freaking out about increasing your intake. Increase your sleep.

Another way to avoid plateau. Zig zag your diet (ex : eat 400 cals/ day for 4 days, then on the 5th, eat 800 cals. Repeat) this will make sure your body does not get scared of only having so little and store more,
Good luck:smile:

Do you feel you have sufficient energy to study probably at home or school?

400 Calories is not a lot of calories to be consuming, although your body may 'survive' for a while on what you are giving it, soon it will start eating away at everything else inside. The nutrients from your skin, hair, nails will all be depleted. Your skin will go a pale colour while your eyes will turn a shade of grey because of the lack of life inside your body.

Rice and Korean stew is good, as it's got everything you need: carbs, protein, fats. To eat this twice a day usually everyday, however, is a different matter as you must vary the foods you are eating. Why?

Think about who you are, what you are. The way I have been taught is that we're kids of the sun, without the sun none of us would be here; there would be no planet earth. So, in order for us to survive, live the best, have the most energy, feel positive and to keep striving is to get as much of the sun inside us as possible. How? Eat the food that are grown by the sun. Foods that are grown in fields, fruits, vegetables as well as cows, sheep, chicken, they too all live off of sun.

?óÔé¼?ôIt's frustrating to see my friends eating so much and not gaining weight. I always feel fat when I hang out with them. I know I shouldn't care, but I can't really stop myself. It is naughty, I think, that most people associate counting calories for when losing weight. Important, remember calories in scientific terms are simply 1000 calories = 1 kilocalorie = 1 kcal = the energy it takes to raise the temperature of 1kg of water by 1?é??C.

Every food holds a very different type of calorie. It is certain types of calories you need, which is where I think people have gotten it all confused. Compare: 250kcal for a chocolate muffin to say 250kcal of Korean stew. The way that your body is going to use those calories and function is completely different.

Another key thing to remember is eating good fats: olives, fish, avocado, nuts, seeds. These foods do not make you fat. Trust me, I weigh 8 stone and am 5?óÔé¼Ôäó4 and I eat these types of foods every day. You feel like you are going to pop and you won?óÔé¼Ôäót want to eat anymore good fats before you start putting on weight.

It?óÔé¼Ôäós the bad fats, crisps, chocolate, sweets, cakes, sweets, that make you fat because of the way your body uses those calories.

Bottom line: eat healthy, and you won?óÔé¼Ôäót ever get fat! Eat junk foods, and you will get fat.

Be healthy.
Be happy.
Live long and prosper.
