Cutting Calories Is Hard on the Soul

I hit somewhat of a mental turnpoint in my life about three months ago and have been exercising everyday or every other day. I have been doing cardio and muscle toning workouts and have even done a few exercises from P90X (Intense stuff by the way).

The hardest part so far for me isn't the exercise because that gives me the "runner's high" and it feels fantastic. The hardest part is the calorie budget.

I have three questions:

1) What are some easy ways to cut calories (like substituting most beverages with water etc.) that don't require you to completely give up the foods you love?

2) Are calories simply calories? If I'm on a 2,000 calorie diet, does it matter where those calories come from? Or are pizza and burger calories going to cause me to lose weight slower than apple and 'nanner calories?

3) When I get bored, I have a habit of eating everything I see. How do I kick this habit?

cut out the fats/oils, replace sugars with artificial sweetners
use Google I've seen too many articles they usually have a title like "10 ways to cut out 100 calories" etc.

2)
some calories are less digestable/absorbable. For example there is something called "resistant starch" which means that perhaps half of the calories in beans "don't count". similar arguments have been made about vegetables ("negative calories"). Personally whilst all of this might indeed be true I prefer not to let this complicate things

but CLEARLY your health depends on getting a significant amount of unrefined plant matter into your diet, no point in dieting down but developing a chronic diesase like diabetes, cancer or heart disease

3)
lots of strategies MIGHT work, experiment:
brush your teeth
hide the food in fridge/cupboard/other room
distract yourself by doing something engaging
play a game - see if you can wait until you actually feel hungry
chew gum

Yes, it's very hard, I know.  I don't claim to know all the secrets because I'm in the same boat, but I'll share what has worked for me.  I took the advice of adding more fiber and it really works.  It takes much longer to digest, therefore making me feel full longer.  Read up on fiber rich foods and eat more of the foods on the lists that you like.  Recently, I've discovered low-cal whole grain bread that's rich in fiber and only has 35 calories per slice.  I can add a tad of mayo, some 97% fat free turkey or ham, lettuce & tomato, mustard, and have a nice sandwich for only 150 calories!  That's much more filling & satisfying than two Oreos. 

The key for me has been to switch to a mostly plant based diet with a little meat instead of revolving all my meals around the meat.

Ever since I started my weight loss quest, I've kept track of the calories I've consumed and burned as much as possible. I've started cutting down on junk like sodas and other stuff over time, like going from 3 sodas a day to 2 per day maximum. I've slowly moved out of my old comfort zone and established a new comfort zone by getting used to eating healthier foods. Now, I eat apples and bananas almost daily.

I can't say that this will work, but for question 1, I'd probably say replace the least healthiest thing to eat with something much healthier, wait a while, replace the next unhealthiest food with something healthier, wait a while, replace the next unhealthy food with something healthier, and so on, and so on, until you have a healthy diet you can be comfortable with.

I would also recommend Nir's answer to question 3. Hide the food somewhere where you can't see it and find something to do that'll keep your mind off of food. I normally compose music on my laptop or draw something to help keep me from going hungry.

Consuming less nutrient consumption doesn't actually mean eating less food. To be able to cut nutrient consumption without eating less and feeling starving, you need to substitute some higher nutrient meals that are lower in nutrient consumption and complete you up.

A calorie is a calorie is a calorie. A calorie is not a physical thing. It is a measurement of heat.  The large calorie, kilogram calorie, dietary calorie, nutritionist's calorie or food calorie (symbol: Cal, equiv: kcal) is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius.

Nutrition is a whole other matter.

Food is broken down into 3 basic categories.

Carbs: Has produce 4 calories per gram

Protein: Same is true for protein

Fat: Has 9 calories per gram

As to your intermittent gluttony, there are a few ways to change that.

1. I highlighted the fact that you "LOVE FOOD" Love your loved ones more.

2. Eat regular and wholesome meals frequently so that you don't get to hungry.
