Hello. Recently, after losing a lot of weight, have I found out from my mother that I was born big boned. Hope seems to to be lost right now because of it. It seems I will never reach that body type I'd want to be because bulky bones appear to have stopped my progress. As of right now I can kinda feel my bones if I was to touch my chest, yet its still big and bulky as it was when I was fat. The only difference seems to have effected my waist which helps, but kinda looks odd now because it goes from bulky to thin then a bit pudgy again (I'm trying to work that off).

On top of the bulky chest, my arms seemed to have reached their limit (While staying healthy) and still seem bigger as well. Am I doomed to look pudgy for my whole life? I am honestly really depressed by this.

I went from 213 to 162 and yet I don't see a big difference because of being big boned.

You forgot to mention your HEIGHT, so you might just still be overweight and will get the best figure that you can have when you lose more fat (and possibly then gain some muscle too). Generally the answer is that a person who has big bones will weigh SLIGHTLY more at a given body fat percentage leanness, but ultimately it makes little difference, and the thing to watch out for is people using being "big boned" as an excuse not to do something about having excess fat. Congratulations on losing over 50lb and good luck with the rest, don't be disheartened.

For the past few years I've been stuck at 5'11ish

I understand it being an excuse and I haven't stopped what I've been doing to lose the weight in the first place. I just am a little disheartened because even with all this weight loss I seem to hit my limit and it's nothing like how I want to look. I was told by people that the fact I'm big boned hurts my chances at getting that look because I will always be bigger and bulkier because of it.

I don't want to give up with my changed ways. I guess I'm really just asking if it's true. Will I never get the body type of a skater kid or something similar. Will I always be that 'big' kid because of my bone structure?

Your BMI is 22.6 - I would say you should try to lose more and review how you like yourself at a lower weight. For example, at BMI 20 you will weigh 143lb so why not shoot for that? You might well like yourself and have no 'big bone concerns' at that weight.

Now if you say you have been stuck at 162lb for a while, you may need to look at what you are doing. You'll be maintaining on about 2,130 (assuming no exercise) so for best results you'll be reducing calories a bit (say to 1,800 and boosting your activity levels).

If cutting calories seems scarey or restrictive, maybe review what it is you are eating, here are a couple of resources to look at

Throughout middle school I convinced myself of the whole idea that I was 'big boned'.

After losing the weight to my proper goal, I was proven wrong. My skeletal structure was very thin.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BEING BIG BONED. If you think you are big boned, then you are simply still overweight or have too much fat.

I would believe what you said, Tour, but I was told his big boned comment from my birthing mother. :/ I believe her because they would of had to tell her this type of thing (I think). On top of that its a few months later and I'm still stuck at this weight of 160. Everything but my boney chest has slimmed down. Feeling my chest it doesn't feel like fat more than it feels like bone. Currently my chest and legs are my biggest issue at the moment because they're the only parts of my body that haven't slimmed down at all.

I don't know what other reason to believe (When it comes to my chest) than being big boned because it doesn't feel like fat at all.. Just bone. It kills me to say this because I'll never get to my goal look because of that one problem outside my ability to fix. I will not give up on losing weight to my goal, but I don't believe my look will ever be achieved. ):

Trust me, unless you have a rare 'gigantism' disease of your skeleton, you are normal. Parents make up terms like 'big boned' to make their kids feel better about themselves.

"8th myth : big bone = overweight

Fact :
Many women blame her bones for the cause of her 'big size'. Women with big bone construction do look bigger, however big bones also make you look taller and more athletic.

The problems will occur only when you eat more than your needs. In other words, calories intake > calories burned. By re-arranging your food habit and exercise plan, you can reach the body shape you always dreamed!"

I think the confusion started when people started saying, "big boned," when they meant fat.  Some people do have bigger bones than others and, for women, it can usually be determined easily by wrist size.

Place the thumb and middle finger of your right hand around your left wrist. If the finger and thumb just touch you are medium boned, if the finger and thumb over lap you are small boned and if they don't touch but are a half inch or more apart you have big bones.  You can look very thin and still be big boned.  Lots of super models are big boned, it gives them the longer legs and broader shoulders they need.  Examples: Kate Winslet and Sandra Bullock are big boned.  Niclole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon are small boned.  All thin all beautiful.

I don't even know how one would determined a baby as "big boned"? As most people don't know what their bone structure is going to be until they have finished growing!

I am a 5'7" female and some may call me "big boned" but really it's not like your actual bones are literally bigger... the saying is an arbitrarily constructed description for people with wider body structures, aka not-petite. Like, I have broad shoulders, wider hips, long legs...
But honestly, I think it my structure was more "normal" I would actually look fatter...and maybe you would too! So don't feel down! :-)
If my hips were more narrow I think my belly fat would have less places to spread itself out and I would have a big belly paunch where now my hip bones are. :-) you know what I mean?

Don't focus on your weight so much as your body fat, as Nir has wisely suggested. You can probably get it officially measured at a gym or doctor's office. :-)

No when you say big-boned soem people se it as a nice way to call someone fat. But what teh real meaning is that they have a larger frame, thicker bones. Wider in porportion to each other. They are just referring to the frame, not the fat.

I see that no one here talked about the genetic effect upon the build of a person. You can understand the value of being "big" when you ask a thin fragile short framed person like me. Its lucky to have a big frame in this world where size matters but if you are not comfortable with it, may be you can try a makeover in order to look lean. It works! Alternatively, if you want to gain inner strength too, just try bodyblade or both.
