Hi,
I have been suffering with pain on the side of my right knee( exact location - inner side of my right knee only ) since about 3 months now. Pain starts if I am basically standing or walking for more than 30 mins or so. The pain is moderate pain and not unbearable at any stage. I can move my leg freely but its just the pain.
Pain goes off completely after I get up from my bed in the morning without the need of any medication or therapy and comes back again as mentioned above. This has been a cycle.
I have taken following treatments over the course of 3 months and also consulted a Sports Orthopedic:
1. R.I.C.E method that is well known ( did not work at all pretty much )
2. Ibuprofen ( taking for 3 months but has minimum effect )
3. Stretching exercises for the leg muscles
4. Xray - No issues
5. MRI scan for the knee - NO tears, etc...found
Pretty much the Ortho was not able to tell what exactly is the reason for my pain. Since there are no tears, why is the pain not going no matter what I do? This is frustrating for me as I am unable to figure out what to do with this. If there are no tears, etc... in the ligaments, then what is the cause of the pain?
If anyone faced similar issues and/or aware of what might be the cause and cure for this and also any suggestions, please help...Thank you

Hi
Any knee pain I get from running I go straight to quad (thigh) exercises. You can you tube quad strengthening exercises.
I do these two exercises.
lie down straight leg, squeeze thigh hard as you can and lift leg 3 x 12
Back against door. slide down door til you are in the sitting position. You will feel it in thighs, hold as long as you can.
I also do squats, but do not recommend them til you get rid of pain.
With all my injuries, I would massage the painful area with your thumb to increase blood flow. See if you can locate where it is most painful and concentrate on that spot.

Thanks very much for ur suggestion..Do you think I should be doing something about hamstring as well?
Also can you tell me how quickly your strengthening exercises worked for your knee pain( is it like days or weeks)?

Just so you know MRI'S may not show the exact problem. You could have a tear and it may not show in a MRI. There is a possibility the knee cap could not be tracking right. Look into a bone defect also which can cause pain to the inside of the knee.I'm sure your ortho guys knows about these it is worth asking him about. I know cause thats what I'm dealing with. I just had my 3rd surgery in 2 1/2 yrs

Hellrazor,
I personally feel there may not be a tear as well, because
1. Pain is not constant ( only prolonged activity brings the pain )
2. Pain is neither acute nor unbearable ( on a scale of 1-10 I would rate 5 as max )
3. I feel tears will hamper the leg movement( like not being able to bend or stretch beyond a certain point ). I do not have such problems
However, I maybe wrong with the above assumptions. It would be great if you can let me know since you had surgeries, did you face any of the above symptoms or anything very specific in your case?

My pain was there no matter what I did. Mine was a bone defect so there was nothing I could do to help it with out surgery. Look into the knee cap no tracking correctly ask your doc about it. Did your doc say anything about bone spurs??? If you had a defect it would have showed in the x ray

Yep work the whole leg hamstrings and calves.
I walk around my garden on toes between reps of arm exercises to strenghten calves. Also heel raises on step, again see you tube for demo.
I think a week should see improvement. You can do quad exercises 3 times a day to see improvement.
Have you located the pain with your thumb and massaged it?

Luckily I am able to locate the exact spot of pain...and yes I have done that a few times when I had pain and it definetly felt good when massaged but have to check for a week or two to test it when I am having more pain..
All your suggestions definetly make sense to me...I am inclined in believing it is more related to some weakness in muscles. All this started after 6 months of treadmill walk during which I also lost 45 pounds and before that I literally was a lazy guy since childhood...So, may be muscles got weak and are not able to take it anymore and probably just need strengthening hopefully..is that even a valid theory?

I have finally changed my routine from running to swimming, cycling. Punch bag and weights in the garden and one gym visit a week.
I did that last week and with cal deficit lost over 2lbs. I am resting hip and achilles injuries from running at the moment so know how you feel.
On the up side I have dropped my cholesterolal and blood pressure into the normal levels. (51 yr old male)
Keep doing the exercises. As soon as i get any knee pain I do the exercises I have recommended. There are not many runners who do not have some niggle going on.
Try changing your exercise routine as above

Would Elliptical be safe on the knees? or does it also hurt them like the treadmill?
I saw on that machine in the gym that it will help strengthen quads/hams/calfs

No actually they are easier on the knees then a treadmill but the best thing right now for your knee would be a bike. Give it some time then jump over to the Elliptical.

You have really got to try it and see
I do not have high opinion of that bit of kit to be honest.
If you want to burn cals and fat and you can't run at the moment, I would Bike/swim or row and eliptical would come a distant third. That is only my opinion.

I disagree if you are looking to burn calories and fat the elliptical would be #1. The only real way to burn a lot on the bike is crank up resistance as high as it will go and stand but that will put stress on the knee . I lost most of my weight using a elliptical and then my mountain bike
