| I work the graveyard shift at a group home for troubled teens so my schedual is all out of wack compaired to "normal" people. Does anyone have any advise about the best time to exercise. I work 10pm to 8am, take the boyfriend to work and am home around 9am, in bed by 10am, sleep until 4pm, pick up the boy then come home and make dinner. I am willing to alter my sleep schedual if I need to, just want some input about the most benificial time to get my butt movin. Thanks everyone.

| Generally the answer is 'whenever you are most likely to be able to motivate yourself to do it', many people like to get it out of the way soon after they wake up (so that will be in the afternoon in your case) so they don't end up blowing it off.

| Hey queenofknives, I work nights to and I stick in my workout before I get the kids after school...I work out and then take a quick shower...then I am all set for the day...at work, if I can, I do some weight workouts while on break....and there is always time for excercises you can do while sitting watching tv. arm raises, shoulder circles, arm presses, but tighteners, stomach tightening, sit ups....leg raises..you name it. and a little here and a little there add up. Most people say that working out in the morning is the best time. Because then your burning stored fat or something like that. But, I can't do that unless I get up at 4am. So, I workout in the evenings.
My point is that you should do it whenever it works in your schedule. Just because your not exercising at the best possible time doesn't mean you won't still benefit from it.

Work out whenever you can squeeze it in. I also work graveyards 11pm-7am and the best time for me is immediately when I get home. So that's 8 hours of physical work and then I come home, pop caffeine and do some more before bed. Works out nicely

Actually, I've heard that the morning is not a good time to exercise. Your glycogen stores are severely depleted during sleep. A light workout of about 10-20 minutes is probably OK, but anything more than that and you risk losing muscle.

I've heard the opposite.. That with depleted glycogen stores you WANT to work out so you're burning the stored fat rather than the glycogen. I've never heard of losing muscle from that. But what do I know

Personally, I think each of our bodies have different needs, and what works for one person might not work for another. As another example, some people can eat and then go right away and work out. I get nausea if I do that.
One thing for sure, though - a lot of people believe the myth that your body burns only glycogen at higher intensities, and only fat at lower intensities, which is not true. Your body does burn more fat at lower intensity, and more glycogen at higher intensity, but they are both burned regardless. If your body doesn't have glycogen as fuel, it will go to your fat stores, but I don't think your fat is the only energy source it will rely on...just be careful.
