Hello all!
New member with a question. First let me give a little background first. I'm a 35 yr. old male, 6'-0" approx 185 190lbs. I am the poster boy for bone breaks, and stitches. When I was "younger" I was extremely active, varsity highschool baseball, varsity swim team, even raced motorcross bikes. So physical fitness was always a part of my daily routine. In 1991ish I was hit by a car and broke my right ankle and cracked my left knee cap. In 2001, my motorcross bike got the best of me. I broke my left femur, left collar bone, internal injuries, and a concussion. I walked around for almost 2 years with a 15" steel rod in my right leg. About 3 years after my crash I started going to a chiropractor. I was told that my right leg was 1/4" shorter than my left because of the fracture. Anyway, to make a long story short. As I get older, my body tends to hurt more. It takes a little longer to get out of bed in the morning. Given the fact that I constantly hurt, any form of exercise really turns me off. I know that I have to do something but I don't know where to begin. Can someone steer me in the right direction?
THX!

| Well, given that you have some medical history - maybe it would be best to pose this question to your doctor. I'm thinking something like walking or swimming, but best to check with an "official".

| Wow, I can't believe you are still alive. Swimming would probably be good.

I wonder if the local YMCA has a pool. Sounds like a good idea. Oh, I did fail to mention that I just had a hernia repaired around the 1st of Nov. 07. Man, I'm afraid to get old.

| Yes! The Y has a pool! That is one of their big selling points. Lots of classes and open swimming too!

You only 35 year YOUNG for crying out loud. Was that a typo cause you are speaking like you are 65. I dont see anyone having a problem with that?
I am 31 years old and am 247 pounds and I am on recovery and am doing pretty good.
I see that you have weak muslces as you have had a hernia.
Wanted to ask you a few questions, do you have energy drink, redbull and other #%@&!.
What is ur diet?
I think first you need to go natural and raw.(no junk food, sodas, energy drinks, processed foods etc.)
Second you need to see a good chiropractor and get a lot of massages.
Third you need to look towards yoga. First start with the pranayams and then got to asanas(remember there are some asanas and pranayams which are to be avoided by people with hernia and there are others for people with knee problems).
Swimming is definately a great choice.
I would suggest eating a healthy green diet vegetarian preferably. You body needs to heal and rejuvenate.
Take a naturopathy camp, where they would give you massages and mud baths. Then follow a good diet and then start off with yogas.
Keep getting regular massages and drink plenty of water.
You can start swimming right away. If you get cramps then you need get a mineral supplement.
Best of luck and you are not old. Stop thinking like that. You are below 40 and no matter how bad you are you still have enough of time(5 years) to get your body back. But its do or die.
Post edited did wrong calculation on your weight.

I entered your stats in the BMI calculator on this site (6 foot, 190 pounds) and here are the results...
BMI Results:
The result of your BMI calculation is: 25.8
BMI
Category
Below 18.5
Underweight
18.5-24.9
Normal Weight
25-29.9
Overweight
30-39.9
Obese
Above 39.9
Morbidly Obese
So I would not consider you extremely underweight. Truth be told, your body fat percentage is a better indicator of your fitness than just BMI.
Anyway, what I wanted to say regarding qwan's post... baby steps are good if they keep you working towards your goals (no need to get discouraged trying to make too many drastic changes too fast). And secondly, the most important thing about exercise is that you enjoy it so that you will continue to do it... so find something you like to do!

Yes trimB you are right. I have my calculator set at kgs and guess I messed up when I manually converted 190 pounds to kgs(I got 60 kgs it should have been 83)
Anyways that is sigh of relief, I was shocked at the statistics. I will have to edit the post I guess.
Anyhow I think that everything else applies in my previous post. Except eat more part.
