You can tone your thigh and butt muscles so they are firmer [e.g. lying leg raises target the outer thigh], but you cannot dictate where you lose fat [but if you are losing fat through diet and exercise, eventually it goes everywhere]

| The only way to have nicer thighs and glutes is to eat a healthy diet and reach/maintain ideal weight. Along with diet, you should exercise your whole body--not just your trouble spots. You need a combination of cardio (with some high intensity intervals) and weight training. Also do balance, core, and stretching exercises. To strengthen your thighs and glutes in particular, do squats, lunges, dead lifts, step-ups, plyometrics, jumping rope, biking, running, swimming.

| Hi, I agree about "spot reducing" but...WALKING LUNGES are the way to go for thighs and butt. I use two 10 lb dumbells while doing it and boy, you can feel it. I step/lunge (you know what i mean!) for 25 paces and then 25 back. My legs are shaking so that's usually my last lower body exercise for the day. Good luck!

Agreed, bbkitty -
Lunges are good. When you're a 'lunge beginner' it's best to do a partial lunge, holding onto a chair at your side for balance. You can still use weights or water bottles to get some extra resistance.
But millions of lunges will only tone - they won't burn off body fat from the areas in question. Sensible eating to reduce body fat is the key.

| I have heard that if you do lunges while you have a big butt already this will just increase the size in that area due to muscle is this true? and also I have sciatica so what exercises can I do safely and effectivly? Thankyou!

| I think one of the best things you can do for your legs and butt is to play volleyball. I've never had a problem with my butt or thighs... they've always been toned, thin, and no cellulite, and I credit that to playing volleyball. You're pretty much in a constant squat unless you're sprinting, jumping, or lunging. Plus, you have fun while doing it, so you don't even realize you're tired. Good luck!

It's unbelievably difficult to add muscle at the best of times. When you're reducing your calories to lose weight, adding muscle is impossible for most people.
All that the lunges will accomplish is to strengthen and shape the glutes and the upper thighs. Unless you eat and work out like Arnie S, you have nothing to fear.
Re. the sciatica - check with your doctor first, but you might be able to do lunges slowly (that's best anyway) while you hold on with one hand to the back of a chair or other stabilizer.

You need to do high intensity workouts to get rid of that extra layer of fat.
This does not however make your butt firm round. If it needs lifting, again its useless.
You need to work out very specific butt muscles. The best exercises are step up, lunge good morning and hip lift. Last edited on 15 May 2009 08:55 am by

Intense exercise burns more fat than long workouts at low heart rates. Spend less time working out and burn more fat. Interval training is the way to go. It is about quality and not quantity.
