Lately i have been struggling with my hours at work, and trying to get my exercise routine done. I have early starts, and i dont usually finish till late in the afternoon, sometimes not till its dark. By the time i am done with my day, which is quite labor intensive, i am physically exausted and the thought of me doing a weight routine makes me feel ill. I have been still doing my 3 km walk .. by the time i get home i basically have exausted all the left over energy. I am not sure how i am going to juggle doing my work outs with this routine.. i am just kinda hoping work drops off a bit, so i can pick up the reins on the exercise regiment again. If anyone has any suggestions on how to work around it, i would be grateful to hear them..
Thanks ..
Lori

No easy answer to this one. Life just gets busy.
At one time I was working 10 or 11 hour days, with a one-hour commute to work each morning and evening. That's up to 13 hours right there.
At this time I was determined to get into shape, and got up every morning at 5 am. I would do stomach exercises and kind of a morning meditation for 30 minutes; drink some OJ while getting into my gym clothes; then walk to the gym which was conveniently only a few blocks away.
I'd have to watch the clock the whole time I was at the gym in order to get done in time to get home, shower, have my cereal and get to work on-time. My evenings were almost a rush trying to eat, do a few other things, and get to bed.
Sounds horrible, but I was never happier or in better shape!
On the other hand, it is important to know that while exercise is very good for your health and also burns calories, it is NOT necessary for weight loss. So if this is a time when you simply have to cut back on exercise, or skip it altogether, don't feel that you have to give up altogether and put on weight.

Oh, and back to your subject.
I tried working out after work, and after dinner. Total failures.
My day could be longer than normal; traffic could be slower than normal; and/or I could end up being surprised to have to attend a long business lunch and not eat my regular, more healthy food I packed the night before. And quite frankly often I'd usually give in and eat a big lunch!
Any one of those factors, and maybe two or all three of them combined... and I didn't feel like working out after work and didn't. Only mornings worked for me. The conditions were always the same... I had just slept.

I struggle with this issue too, especially at times when work takes up most of my day and all of my energy. I'm on my feet all day, moving, lifting, carrying, etc.
Have you considered a pedometer? I've been contemplating using one just to get an idea of exactly how active I am at work. Maybe on days when my pedometer hits a certain level, then I "excuse" myself from exercise that day? I'm not sure really, it's just one idea that's been in the back of my head for a while.

Peter, i do find i am not succeeding to get any exercise done after work, its always too late and i am way too tired.. so i think if i cant do it in the morning, i will just have to skip it for the day.
Trimblebe, actually its funny you should mention the pedometer. The library, which is just across the road from where i work, has pedometers they hire out. It is with the 10 000 steps plan. Not sure if ur familiar with that plan or not but the whole idea is that everyone takes 10 000 steps every day for better health. I was thinking of hiring one of these packs and just seeing how much i do walk . Adding the amount of lifting and other activities i do each day, and thinking about it, its no wonder i am tired .. its like running a marathon everyday!
that might be a good idea..
Just a note as well, i always make sure i have my oatmeal and honey before i go to work, wether i am starting at 6 or at 9 am just so i know i have eaten properly at least once.
My goal today is to sit and have half an hour for lunch and have at least a healthy sandwich and a OJ . Thats two meals.. and i have got fish in the fridge for dinner.

The 10,000 steps idea is how I originally started thinking about wearing a pedometer at work. My theory... if I work a particularly long day, and I make 10,000 steps - then I would feel justified taking it easy at home after work. Like I said, I haven't actually obtained a pedometer. So I'd be interested to hear if you decide to try one out.
So far, my rule was I did not have to exercise on days where I worked more than 12 hours. That doesn't always seem to indicate how tired I feel though.
By the way - I really like the idea of getting a good, healthy breakfast despite a busy day. I've found that it helps tremendously to get my day started off positively, and I seem to make even healthier choices from there.
Thank you for starting this post. It's been on my mind a bit lately, and it's good to hear your perspective.

well today i managed to get hold of a pedometer.. just have to figure out how to use it .. now i have everyone at working thinking its a good idea and more than likely going to get them too! I am hoping to start it on monday.. and do a count everday for a month.. will post the results in my journal i think.. just so i have a record of it. Today, was another long day.. 11 hour day .. and i walked to work and home and i walked at lunch time, not to mention all the walking and work i did at work. Phew! am exausted but this week end i have the whole week end off.. so tomorrow morning i am going for a walk to the creek (apparently its flooding down there and we have been in a seven year flood.. so its a must see) and then, i will come home and do my work out.. then do the shopping etc .. i feel more positive today about all this, and a lot less guilty.. so thanks for the feedback everyone i appreciate it.. it helps keep me focused.
blessings ..
