I know its a good thing to eat fruit. Basic elementary food pyramid stuff. Problem is it goes bad so quickly. Sometimes its close by the time you buy it, let alone a week after you've gotten it home.

Well yesterday I had a great idea. I saw in the freezer section frozen fruit. I love cold food. Its really cold but melts in your mouth and tastes like a dessert without any of the regret. On top of that it lasts until you eat it.

Just thought I'd pass this along to everyone if you haven't already tried it. I have blackberries now and they are delicious.

Its handy to keep around for smoothies & stuff but fresh is so much better. (what is up with Americans & not being able to shop once a week?)

One thing I like though is sticking fresh bananas in the freezer & then once they're frozen peel them & put them in the blender & you have a kind of ice cream stuff.

Actually that's not it, at least not for me. I have the same problem as DP, it takes quite the effort to preserve fruits and veggies past about 3 days.  Whether it's because of the corporate farms and something they're doing, the #%@&! packaging that is allowed to be used - who knows.  It simply does not keep in a way tht's appeaing for very long.   I have noticed that it's far worse on veggies then fruit though.  (probably because the fruit is picked unripe and allowed to ripen enroute where as veggies are just dead.)   Organic is still a niche here, so I like organic, but it lasts an even shorter time.

I know you hate them, but sometimes the best course here is frozen.  Ridiculous in this country, but true.

I cut up pineapple beforehand and put it in an airtight container in the fridge. I pluck the grapes and do the same. Both of them become better the longer they sit in the fridge.

Veggies are a different matter, yeah. I cut up my salad and eat on it for a week, but by the end of the week, it's not as good. I've just learned to stomach it, anyway.

Watch out for frozen veggies, though - some of them do have added sodium. Veggies have a little bit naturally, but if a serving has over 100 mg, then I'd put in back in the freezer.

Thanks for the heads up Crimson. I made sure to check and make sure there wasnt any added sweeteners but I didn't check on the sodium. Luckily I'm good. No sodium and these fruits are delicious. :chewing:

I agree with shannon on that one.  If it were up to me, I'd just go food shopping once a week and get only what we need for that week.  But my parents don't really like going food shopping, so they prefer to go like once a month and get a ton of food at one time.  It kinda makes me mad, cuz they want food that, should we not eat it right away, will last until the end of the month.  That means a lot of processed, refined foods.  I have to ask for any veggies I want cuz my family doesn't really eat them.  And usually those veggies turn out to be frozen, with the exception of the occasional cucumber or salad mix.  Fruit is also something I have to ask for, and usually comes canned, except for when they get fresh apples or bananas.

As far as fresh fruits and veggies not lasting for more than 3 days,  I find that my apples and bananas last at least a week if not longer quite easily.  Also, as long as we keep the veggies in the fridge, those also last at least a week.  So I'm wondering why everyone else is having a problem with that?

I have a helpful little tip to get fruit & veg to last maybe 3 extra days in the fridge.. Line your veggie crisper trays with newspaper (about 3 pages folded up will do)

Change it at least 3 times a week

Also don't keep your bananas near any other fruit or veg (unless you're trying to ripen avocados) I have this great banana hook thing where my bananas hang on my kitchen bench.

(I dont know if anyone has taken offence by the way, im not trying to slag off Americans or anything, (i can see you all do what you can & most have you have got way more  results than me!) it just boggles my mind...like for the first time in my life i want to go there just to see your grocery stores for myself)

Oh also with fresh herbs & asparagus, dont just chuck them in the fridge, if you have a tall shelf area that can accomodate it use a wide mouthed jar (i use an old salsa jar) put about an inch of water in & treat your herbs & asparagus like fresh flowers in a vase in your fridge (try to change the water every day too) I started doing this when i realised i was spending like $20 a week on fresh herbs...they last a lot longer now.

I personally just like things really cold. Plus its more like a dessert. On top of that I often forget to eat my fruit. I frequently will leave my produce in the fridge for a week or more only to remember it and miss out on all the healthy deliciousness. Hence frozen food is perfect for me.

If you like yours fresh then by all means. For me though its the perfect solution and with enough people on this site I thought it might be for someone else too.

Good luck everyone with your endeavors.

Well, I put a banana in the freezer and left it there overnight.  Now I can't peel it.

That sounds awesome. I can just picture it.

As an aside I work in a wine shop and if anyone serves wine a trick to use is freezing grapes and putting them in your glass. It chills the wine add flavor and doesn't water it down like ice cubes.

lol yeah about that...it is tricky you need to leave it to soften for a little while or you can freeze them with the skin off in a freezer bag

Frozen fruit is great.  I love frozen blueberries in my Rice Krispies.  It makes the milk all cold and blue berry-y.

Debbie Myers Green Bags!  They really do work!  You can buy them at Wal Mart, Drug Stores, or just order them online.  Fresh produce lasts much longer when you store them in these.
