Hi there!  Well, as you can see from the post subject, I'm pretty much addicted to sugar free gum.  I probably chew a pack a day.  The problem is, I haven't been adding the calories to my daily count, probably because most types of gum claim to be <5 calories per stick, which could be .1 to 4.9 calories!  Does anyone try to factor in calories for gum?  Do you think it would even make a difference?

I don't do gum (braces!) but I have a smililar issue with sugar free mints.  I count them because they usually add up to about 50 cals.  But I'm always minty fresh !

Easy. Weigh the pack - figure out how many grams it is.

My sugar-free chewing gum is 175 calories per 100g so take the number of grams and multiply by 1.75 to get the calories

(or if your scale is caliberated in ounces, 49.7 calories per ounce)

Hope that helps!

Yeah, it's probably not a good idea to ignore so many calories; I definitely will begin counting them.

But good news!  After a little investigation online, I realized that I missed the really really small font saying that the "calorie content ... has been reduced from 5 to 3 calories".  So my gum ends up being 158 calories per 100 grams and 42 calories for the 14 pieces in the pack.

I'll probably start chewing it more sparingly now that I'm counting those calories.  Which is good since I spend so much money on gum these days and my mom always gets on my case about the aspartame in it.  ("Kills brain cells" .... ?)

When sparing gum remember isn't it better to use 50 calories a day on gum then 500 on snack food that you didn't mean to eat in the first place.  Gum keeps me from grazing and munching.

I certainly used gum to keep me in check for a while. Mine works out about 2.7 calories a piece. It got to the point that I was chewing it through the night - whilst I was asleep. I think it was playing on my 'sweet tooth' and keeping it going.

Eventually I decided to make it an issue and just stop the night-time chewing. And you know what? I survived to tell the tale

Chewing gum is a tool. Use it if it is working for you!

yeah, i am a gum addict, too.  i have always counted the cals (Extra has a full 5 cals per stick)... anyway, i guess if it helps you, keep with it.  i have found that it gives me horrible stomach aches and makes me bloated (but i am still addicted).  it does sort of keep me away from munching, but after a while it sort of stopped working as well.  i am trying to kick the habit in general.  i also find that even sugar free gum makes my teeth hurt.

have you been addicted long?

I chew a lot of sugar-free gum as well. Although it says <5 I just count it as 5 calories.

I've probably been addicted for about 3 years now... and recently I'd gotten to the point in which I would pop two pieces into my mouth at once!  That sure made the packs go quickly!  It's probably become more of a habit than a weight loss tool, but I still chew it when I can't have what everyone else is eating.  Since I last posted, I've been counting the calories and I haven't gone over my caloric limit for the day.  I'm not depriving myself of gum, but I'm down to one piece at a time .  I should probably try to quit altogether, though, considering I had jaw surgery about 3 years ago, but we'll see.
