Ok, what does everyone do when they want something so bad and can't have it?

Right now, I would kill for any kind of beef. I am on a strict diet right now with no red meats cause of my cholesterol. My cholesterol has to be down before I go back in next month or my doctor might put me on meds.

I can't even remember the last time I had some real beef of any kind. I eat chicken, turkey, and fish all the time. But, right now, I want beef!

Please help! I really could use some encouragement to get through this. Is there something that you do when you get cravings to keep from giving in?

Have you tried turkey burger? It's not the same, but I think it tastes pretty good.

There's veggie burger, too, but I don't know much about that.

I can certainly understand your frustration, though. My diet is also mostly white meat and fish as far as meats go, but I love me a hamburger! LOL

Since you're much closer to your goal than I am, this might not work for you, but when I see something that I really want to to eat, I usually just think, "Hey, I'm working too hard to do something like that."

You've done so well, cportwine! I know you can pull through this. I believe in you.

Yea, I eat turkey burgers alot. Usually when the family is grilling hamburgers. They just aren't the same. Most of the time I am ok with it. But, for whatever reason today has been hard.

I finally broke down and made a pizza thing with cut up turkey lunch meat and it was pretty good. So, I think the craving has past.

I don't know why, but every so often I get this terrible craving for a big fat greasy cheese burger. I even think "who cares, go on meds, then you can eat what you want."

Thank god, I always come to my senses.

As a fellow cholesterol watcher I can tell you that I am able to eat the occassional small sirloin steak with no ill effects (trick - SMALL and SIRLOIN).  Or a small bowl of vegetable beef soup is usually ok too.

You might want to try a pizza with ground Boca on it. (wheat crust, sauce, use parmesan and low fat skim mozzerella and the Boca.  Put the Boca on top so it gets a little crispy and tastes a little more beefy)

Hey, veggie beef soup is an excellcent idea. I never even though of it. I will do that next time I get a bad craving. I have never tried boca.

I haven't had steak in so long. That was one of the things I gave up when I first started dieting. Might have to pick some up for this weekend.

I also found some smoked chicken in the freezer last night. Might have to thaw that out and have some. Something about the smoked flavor that make me think I am eating beef.

Thanks for the ideas guys

Try bison!  It's a bit lower in cholesterol than beef, and also much lower in fat and calories.  I really like it - it has a very good flavor.  A bit pricey, but not too bad if you're planning on eating only a little bit anyways.

My cholesterol is on the upper end of normal and I'm trying to get it down...can I ask why red meat is worse for cholesterol?  Looks like the amounts are about the same for chicken and pork.  Am I missing something?  Thanks!

I don't know for sure without researching it. But, I think it's pretty much all meets and the ones that are higher in fat. So, I try to select very lean cuts of meat. I avoid hamburger and use turkey burger (which is half the fat). If I do eat red meat, I make it like 90% or have lean cuts. Chicken I eat the kind without the skin and try to eat breast meat. Pork, I not real sure about. I don't eat it very often anyway. I do try to get things in turkey mostly. Like turkey dogs and brats instead of pork or beef ones.

I don't think its just red meats that are bad. Red meats are just my favorites that I can't have.

If you want to lower yours I suggest you do some research on it. There are alot of little things you can do to reduce it. Mine is a little high right now, but I am sure it will be down to normal next time I go in.

I eat allot of fish, nuts, oats, and things with fiber. So, after the next check at the doctors I can relax a little bit.

Thanks for the info!  I've done some research, but unfortunately get alot of conflicting data.  Like most things in the diet and health area   Sounds like you know alot more about it than I do.

You were talking about beef, and beef only at the beginning. Now you're talking about a hamburger. I think you you're craving for something else. Is it possible that you have a minor craving for beef and a MAJOR craving for what accompanies the beef in the hamburger? I'm just putting forward a theory.

Cravings are often, or maybe always, a lack of certain minerals or/and vitamins. The problem is to identify that mineral or vitamin. I'm sure someone here could help me on that.

The bison might be a good option.  I've had bison steak and it's tasty.

Grilled portabella mushrooms brushed with olive oil and seasoned like a steak might be good as well.

When I crave beef, it's not the beef really that I crave. It's the smell that starts it all. You would put a piece of steak in front of me, and I would not care less. If I smell an uncooked one, I don't care either. But cook it, and the smell just gets me. If I look at a chocolate cake, I'd kill to have a piece of it even though I don't smell it. Each food seems to attract with one of our senses. The beef, the smell and the chocolate, the sight.

You really should try my lean beef & blueberry burgers Cindy, they're so good. I had Finnish backpackers come stay at my place for a week & i made them & they woulden't shut up about how good they were. I think you guys would have something similar there, my grocery store stocks "heart smart beef" which is ground lean beef.

Also a beef stir fry is still pretty good for you, just have a heap of veggies in it too so its mostly veggies but a little beef. It would be especially good with soba noodles, which are made of buckwheat which lower cholesterol http://www.healthhokkaido.com/files/Articles_Oshimi/soba.cfm

If you only eat LEAN beef say once a month I coulden't see it cause any adverse health concerns.

Yea, I know, I don't eat to much meat that isn't very lean. And even the lean stuff, not that much. I do eat allot of turkey and fish.

Anyway, I think my cholesterol is high, cause it's hereditary.

Hey, do you have a recipe for the blueberry burgers... that sounds yummy!
