I have been trying to lose the last 20 pounds for a couple of years now. I exercise every day and watch what I eat but felt I had to lower my calories even further in order to break through the plateau and finally drop those pounds. My problem is that I HATE being hungry and I was fighting a losing battle. I have tried appetite suppressants but if I ever found one that worked it did not last long - maybe a few weeks at most.

Well I am posting here because I stumbled upon an idea that worked for me and wanted to know if anyone else has had similar results. The gym I work out at was giving away protein bars. The brand that I tried had 20 grams of protein and when I ate it I was full for about 3 hours. This gave me the incentive to eat healthier foods - like fresh fruits and vegetables. So I made it a routine to eat a protein bar in the morning for a meal replacement. Then at lunch and dinner I was not that hungry so I ate lighter using mostly fruits, vegetables and grains, etc. and would often eat half of a protein bar 30 minutes prior to each meal and it really seemed to suppress my appetite.

As it turns out, I have lost 16 pounds in the past 1 1/2 months by reducing my calories and continuing the exercise that I have been doing for two years now. Friends from the gym have asked how I lost the weight and they are also looking into eating more protein products to stay full longer and resist the temptation of eating more high calorie foods. It is working for them too.

The protein bars I that work for me need at least 20 grams of protein or else they don't make me feel full. A good one with 20 grams is Promax. I have also found another one which I started eating today, it is called Pure Protein and has 32 grams per bar. I was stuffed for hours afterwards. You can also eat natural foods that have protein too but I think the key here is to eat more protein so that you don't feel as hungry. This will give you the determination to stick with the diet - whatever one you might be on.

BTW, I am 5'10" and reduced my calories to about 1,500-1,700 per day while exercising each day.

I can't say that I have ever had any of the protein bars. But, I do eat allot of protein, especially in the morning. It keeps my energy up and doesn't make me tired like eating carbs in the morning does. So, I try to snack on turkey pieces, chicken pieces, stuff like that. I usually have something left over. I love snacking on leftover grilled chicken. If I don't have anything else, then I snack on ham slices. I am currently trying to break the ham habit. So, I am trying to get use to turkey instead.

I don't know about the keeping you full longer thing, cause I don't usually get hunger pains. But, my food lady for my daycare told me to feed the kids things with protein to keep them full longer.

It sounds like you have found something that works for you. Good luck!
