I have been eating flaxseed on my cereal for awhile now. I really like it. But, sometimes I don't eat cereal. So, I was thinking of taking a pill- flaxseed oil tablet.

Does anyone here do both? Eat it and take it. Is this safe? Should I just do one or the other? Is one better than the other?

Looking for everyones ideas here.

I did do some reading on the net and best as I can tell it would be safe. But, I couldn't find much information on the pill form of the flaxseed oil.

The two concerns are: oil can go rancid (refrigerate it and keep it in a dark container and away from sunlight) and the oil has more calories and less micronutrients than the seed itself. (this is what I have read I am not speaking from experience I sometimes have flax seeds and have never had the oil)

Could you possibly put the flaxseed on something you normally eat besides the cereal?  I really like mine on either yogurt or on my salads.

I've never had the liquid/pill forms - sorry no help lol!

yea see, not much info on the pill form....

I have tried it on other things. But, the cereal seems to be the only thing that I don't notice it that much. And it taste good on the cereal cause of the nutty flavor. I tried once to drink it in milk. That didn't work well, it all went to the bottom of the glass and then I couldn't drink it. lol, nasty

Maybe I will do another search and see what I can up with.

I love flaxseed meal (ground up flaxseed)  in my yogurt. I miss it when I don't add it. It provides a nice texture to it.

That was a great artical! Now I have another question.

I already take fish oil and eat fish like twice to three times a week. So, am I over doing it by doing the flaxseed thing to?

Can you get to much omega 3?

I buy natural peanut butter that has flaxseed in it, so that's one great way to get your flaxseed as well since the nuttiness of the flaxseed goes well with any other types of nuts.

We actually might need more Omega 6 than Omega 3 in our diet (I forget the recommended ratio). However almost all of us get tons of Omega 6 and hardly any Omega 3 at all, so only by supplementing with Omega 3 can we get to the right balance.

For example I think Lyle McDonald recommends taking 6 grams of fish oil to get the amount of essential fatty acids we need (remembering that only a part of that is omega 3) wheras if I correctly recall Dr Fuhrman recommends 2 tablespoons flax seeds.

If you are concerned about tipping things the other way, enter all your food into a computer program or a website that is capabale of tracking all micronutrients (for example FitDay has such an 'advanced' option, normally hidden by default but you can change it) and then look at your Omega 6:Omega 3 ratio, you shouldn't go any lower than 1:1
