Just checked the nutrition stats at Dunkin Donuts:

Small coffee (10 oz) with skim milk:  25 calories, 0 fat

Coffee with cream and sugar:  120 caloires, 50 calories (6 grams) from fat, 3.5 grams of saturated fat!

Think about that if you drink at least 10 oz per day every day that's an EXTRA 2190 grams of fat and  34675 calories per year you'd be saving by drinking your coffee with just skim milk

Interesting. I used to be a mega coffee-drinker. No matter where I went---the mall, the grocery store, even a car dealership, if there was coffee---I'd be drinking it.

When I decided to start my current lifestyle, I realized that drinking coffee would not be in my best interests. With the caffeine and sugar? I rid myself of it along with soda and various other not-so-good-for-you beverages.

My morning beverage is now a green tea. If I happen to need a caffeine buzz I might turn to this healthy organic coffee which I sweeten with splenda and a tiny little bit of 2% milk. I hardly ever order out coffee because I like to know exactly what goes in it.

Soda? I pretty much only drink that on the rare occasions when I go out to dinner or when I'm overly-exhausted yet need to get some work done.

Skip the milk and sugar it just dilutes the real coffee taste. Coffee Black is 0 calories.

When I'm thinking about nutrition, you won't find me in a Dunkin Donuts.

(Maybe other times!)

Just today I measured exactly the amount of sugar and milk I put into my coffee.  I wasn't measuring before - it was a real eye opener.  In the past I must have had over a 100 cal for every cup! (maybe even 200!)  I am leery of the side effects of artificial sweetners though - even splenda, but I guess I'll use it for now to shave some calories.

I would like to add though, that coffee is good for the gall bladder.

:coffee: Cheers!

Hi Sassykat,

There is so much conflicting information about what is healthy or not healthy that it is impossible to determine what is reality and what is just a subjective opinion.

Artificial Sweeteners like Aspartame and Splenda are the dieters friend. Eliminate those sweeteners and you may be consuming 500-1000 extra calories a day.

Some health experts insist, and have been insisting for over 30 years, these types of sweeteners cause brain damage as well as other health problems because in laboratory tests with mice that is what happened. But in these laboratory tests mice were given quantities that were 10-100 times what would be equivalent for a human being. I would guess if someone drinks 500-1000 ounces a day of diet soda there would be serious health consequences but in moderation many health experts see no harm in sweeteners.

Dr. Ted Broer, a health expert, says it's ok to have a cup of coffee if you are visiting a neighbor's house but if you want to be healthy never buy coffee or drink coffee at home.

These days some health experts say almost every food at the supermarket is processed and unhealthy. You can't eat soup because the salt content is astronomical. Add in that you should not buy eggs and milk at the supermarket. Plus you can't buy any bread at the supermarket because it contains high-fructose corn syrup. You need to buy organic fruits and vegetables but what is sold at the supermarket isn't that healthy - so you need to be shopping at some health food store.

For 20 years people were eating low fat foods and believing they were eating heart healthy foods only to discover these low fat foods contained partially hydrogenated oils/Trans Fats and were unhealthy.

Myself, I feel artificial sweeteners are no great danger to my health but I aim for moderation when it comes to sweeteners, coffee drinking, saturated fats, processed foods and the list goes on and on.

All we can do is try to educate ourselves by reading and research, and then make a judgement call as to what would be healthy for us. But I'm convinced if someone eats a lot of fruits and vegetables and cuts way back on processed foods, saturated fats, and trans fats their blood pressure and cholesterol numbers will be a lot better.

I'm a MAJOR coffee addict, but I have a really hard time drinking coffee black. I could live without milk in it, but not sugar... and that's my problem. I'm trying to just wean myself off coffee so I drink less (therefore, consuming less sugar). I won't touch artificial sweeteners. I really wish I could love black coffee the way so many of my co-workers do, life would be so much easier!

Here's a coffee site I got a lot of helpful info from - I'm from Canada though so the site is Canadian-based, but it's worth a look if you are a coffee-junkie or interested in drinking it: http://www.coffeeandhealth.ca :coffee:

Kalypso.. You should try putting vanilla soy milk into your coffee....it's good for you, but it's also sweet, so it may eliminate your need for the sugar?

I tried a different brand of vanilla soy milk a few weeks ago, and realized that it tasted rather sweet.  Then I looked more closely at the label and it had SPLENDA in it... sneaky!!!
I'm not super strict about artificial sweeteners, but I do try to avoid them mostly and very much resented having it more or less snuck into my soy milk.  I guess the lesson is read labels closely!!

Actually that's not a bad idea! But I'll be sure to check for the splenda.. but if it's sweet it's probably some form of sugar either way. I tried to put honey in as a more 'healthy' sugar to use but I didn't really like the way it tasted in coffee

I used to have the same problem, but experimented with different brands until I found one I really liked. Now I wouldn't dream of sullying my coffee with any additives.

(I did cut back to 2 cups a day, but it makes me savour them more).

Here in Portugal, they have a great brand called 'Sical' which makes a blend of five differently sourced coffees. I'm tempted to sneak a third cup today... but I won't.
